Bought a Tikka 270 about a year ago. Tried 4 different factory loads in it and it shot ok but not quite the 1 MOA it's guaranteed to do. While back I bedded the action and free floated the barrel. It's advertised as coming from factory with a free floated barrel but it has a spot halfway between the recoil lug and end of forearm that supports the barrel. After the bedded and floating I was still getting around 1 1/4 moa out of it with its favorite flavor of ammo. Vertically the group was super tight but horizontally my group was bigger than I was hoping. Was just going to add some filler to stiffen up the forearm of the stock but I like playing around and seeing what results I get so I went ahead and fully bedded the barrel. Figured if it didn't work out, with just a little work I could relieve the barrel. Be interesting to see what happens. Kind of busy weekend so I'm not sure when I'll get the results but I'll post them when I do. Will say for a budget stock the factory fit on the action was surprisingly tight. Didn't leave much epoxy after bedding. Free floated and action bedded my new Weatherby Vanguard awhile back went from at least 2 1/2 moa with remington tipped core lokts to 1/2 to 5/8 moa. I'm not a gun nut or long ranger shooter but I'm enjoying toying around with the rifles and am learn some stuff as I go. [Linked Image]

Very nice. Hard to beat the 270! How much time do you have in it start to finish

Bedding the barrel was pretty easy, maybe a hour counting cleanup. Bedding the action probably a couple hours.

I am interested to see groups , have bedded a few actions never the entire barrel.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Hope it shoots better for ya!

I like to bed action and out barrel a couple inches with the rest of the barrel free floating. If your stock is the problem (probably is) you might be on to something.

These plastic stocks they put on guns now a days are complete junk.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Make sure screws come up solid quickly and then a slight turn more to tighten.
Make sure the magazine box is free floating between action and floor plate when screws are tight.

Well had a change of plans today so I got out and shot a little. Fairly windy today but I shot in an old rock quarry so I was able to setup behind a rock wall and mostly get out of the wind. Shot 2 three shot groups with its least favorite ammo I have for it which usually is 2" groups plus or minus. First group today with that ammo was 2.14" at a hundred. Don't know if I pulled it that bad or if the gun had to settle in after being took apart and bedded. Second group with this ammo was .532". First group with its favorite ammo was .732", which previously it was pretty consistently 1.25". Second group was .827". This gun has consistently shot 2 tight and one flyer out of a 3 shot group no matter who shot it. Full barrel bed appears to have fixed that. Also seems to have really tightened up the ammo it really didn't like. Very limited shooting but I'm pretty satisfied with results.

Also shot the 7mm a little more since free floating and action bedding. Had only tested it with the remington tipped core loks since the work. The remingtons where it's least favorite ammo previously but they went from 2 1/2" plus groups before the workup to 1/2 to 5/8 groups. Tested it with its favorite ammo pre barrel and action work and the work didn't seem to help that ammo.1 1/2" to 2" groups today out of it.

Correction second group is .750" not .532. Was messing around and wrote distance down to closed 2

If you assume that one low shot or flyer was possible a pulled shot and therefore isn't the norm, it is indeed shooting better.

I'm not a great shooter but I don't know if I could have pulled it that bad the way I was setup. I shot those first 2 shots and I thought oh my I made it worse.... I'm sure some of the gun gurus on here might have a better Idea but I was wondering if the gun being bedded and disassembled if it could of just took a couple shots for it to settle back in the stock....??? I guess I'll know more when I get to shot it some more.

Next time take a small caliber gun with you. A 22 or a 17 HMR is what I bring with me when I run into a possible case of the jimmies.
Shooting the small guns allows me to get settled in and work on sighting "Carl" in.
Once I am dialed in, it is miraculous how well I then am able to let the big gun do what it is capable of.
