CD rates are around 5 percent also. I am expecting i bond rate to drop a little, just my opinion.

Newest return rate for the next six months beginning May1st is 4.3%. Less than half of what it was a year ago but higher than forecast prior to the recent announcement. The main selling point for me is no state income taxes from the proceeds. I've also got some CD's at 5.2% for twelve months, but I'll pay state taxes on the returns in addition to federal taxes. Same with my equities.
I bonds have been around since the late 1990's. Since they are backed by the US tax payer, I'll put some of my eggs in that basket. The current budget stalemate has me paying attention, but I don't think either side will chance being the guilty party who caused US Government bonds to fall to junk status. Although... I wouldn't put it past the Dems to play chicken with our financial wellbeing. We will see.
I'm retiring for the second time next week and I need to preserve what little $ I have left. Anyone reading this...any financial advice would be appreciated (other than buying lottery tickets).

I agree about the Dems pushing this to, and maybe over.....the cliff.

IBonds are probably safe for now but I would avoid any maturity dates between May 11 and October 30 of this year.

. Personally for myself this has been a great way for me to save for the long run. Since 2006 I have been purchasing Ibonds. Every week. Jan. 1st we started EEBonds as well. After 20 years they will double in value. Collecting a small interest rate as well. IMO it is another avenue to save money. One take away from my journey of learning about investing is Diversity.
