One of my favorites since childhood!

My neighbor as a kid, Mr. Tom, ran them, and I'd crack my window or get up and go sit out on the porch to listen.

Many decades later, my new neighbor penned his up a 1/2 mile from his house, and a 100 yds from mine.

Not so big a fan then, lol.

Emet Brohard came the closest to winning the world hunt with a blue tick coming in second place with his Goose Creek Tack hound.

It may look like a bluetick but it identifies as a black and tan.

Friend had a pack of deer hounds that included a former coon dog that was donated because he would also chase deer. That dog would trail a day old track and rarely ever hunted with the others, and was never loaded up at the end of the day. He was usually out for 48 hours.

I raised a grandson of Emet Brohard's,, Solid Rock. I got Buddy at 6 weeks of age. His sire was a son of Solid Rock and his dam was a non registered blue female. I single registered Buddy when the English Assn. opened for single registration. The Bluetick Assn. didn't open their single registration for several years. They goofed up big time. I showed him in the woods with an inspector and he treed a coon. He had a locate that a 6 year old kid could recognize and treed so hard that he sounded like 2 dogs treeing. I made many a Treeing Walker owner sad on the competition hunts. Ole Bud became Nite Champion Mud Creek Buddy. He sired PKC champion Tic Toc Doc.

That was the bulk of our pack of deer dogs back in the eighties. Trash running hounds and curs give to us. That didn't last long though as afternoons riding the roads rounding up dogs miles away wasn't fun.

Switched to big beagles and had more fun.

My fur hound was a Bluetick out of Dave Deans , Hammer 4.
Ran him with a walker out of Gold Creek Mundo.
Bawl mouthed hard, set down tree dog.
Bluetick worked a cold track.
Hot nosed walker would make it climb or Bay him.
When he opened might as well head that way , he would tree it before you got there.
Squall mouth hard chop tree dog.

Still not knowing anything about coon dogs, that was an awesome read. Seemed like some hardcore coonhound slang.

Hot nosed = won't work an older "cold" scent track needs fresh scent, usually quicker to tree and not wasting time but not so good in areas with thin game populations or game not moving.

Cold nosed = able to work older tracks but can get bogged down or unable to catch up to game

JMO, a good hound should be able to do both but pairing a brace of both types that will work together are a coon's worst nightmare

Bawl mouth = the classic OWOOOH hound cry given while on trail

Chop mouth = ARP, ARP, ARP usually given when treed or bayed

Squall mouth = sometimes called a yodel but a higher pitched bawl with a quicker cadence like a chop

Bugle mouth = more of a clear bawl sounding much like a bugle

Coonhounds typical bawl/squall on track with a changeover to a chop when treed. Some do not, I've seen many a modern chop mouth all the way walkers. Some are all bawl.

Most old time houndsmen want a bawl on track with a distinct changeover when they go to tree followed by a chop on tree.

Cur folks prefer dead silent on track only opening on tree.

I like em all if they got fur at the tree. I do like to hear that bawl. Got my first bird dog now. Him and my grandson are buddies. Hard to coon hunt around here now due to antler hunters. I got permissions but no way to keep a dog on property with permission. Twenty five years ago very few cared. Antler hunting/leasing changed all that. Guys 8 states away have cameras up that beep their cell phones. They will call the game warden from 800 miles away if your on their lease.

I love a cold nose dog…that’s why I have blue dogs. I was in a two night competition hunt and my dog treed a layup in the last few minutes of the first night to win. That spot was our first dump the next night…’ol blue went straight to the base of that layup and cold tracked it and treed it again. The other dogs in the cast never even opened up. Two guys withdrew and me and the other guy hunted it out. My dog won the second night too…he was as honest as the day is long and knew how to handle his cold nose. RIP ‘ol boy…keep ‘em treed…I’m on my way.
