I tilled and seeded and then went over it with a drag harrow to try and work it in a little, I was concerned that I wasn’t achieving the recommended planting depth of 1-1/2”-2”” but I see a lot of guys no till broadcasting right on the soil surface. I know a lot depends on moisture, how soon and how much but what works for you?

Are you doing it this spring as a short term cover crop to add nutrients to the soil for something you plan to plant say in early summer?

"And God said, Let us make man in our image and let them have dominion and all the creatures that move along the ground".

Best is to get it under the soil.
Why are you planting it this early?

Winter rye will only get about 7-8 inches tall and will not spike during the summer. It needs to vernalize to spike and grow tall. If all you want is a short, thick cover crop then OK if you want a typical winter rye crop that gets 3-5 foot tall, spring is not the time. You can plant annual rye grass which will die off in the fall. Your depth you are asking about is recommended. Rye is very vigorous and hardy.

A lot of small grains used to get spread with a spinner box and disked in that were raised for grain, so try to get them deep and they’ll do better.

We broadcast it on and drag lightly over it or just run a packet over it.

Rye has a natural alleliopathic(spelling) capability which means it gives off chemicals that other plants don't like so that should help with weed control. Till it in good and kill the rye as much as possible as it will compete with your other plantings for water and nutrients if it does not die.

I have a few landing areas on the logging road we put in last fall- they will be planted- I’m not sure what the soil seed bank contains, it historically seems to have been woods but with all the soil disruption I wanted to suppress as many weeds as possible - still may have to spray it.
Thanks
