I have cardboard with little or no ink. Thinking about putting it down in garden with straw on top. Will there be a problem for soil when tilled in the Fall? Wife’s idea and I smell something fishy.

I used all sorts of card board under my wood chip mulch in the garden , you well be lucky to even find it by next spring just get the tape off the ink is almost always soy based now any way.

come spring I rake the chips that are left into isles and do a little tilling then planting again

If I had even more mulch I might not even till

look up Lasagna gardening basically one big low compost pile you grown in

getting enough material is my issue to do it on any sort of scale.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When I lived in SC my neighbor had access to all the corregated he wanted and used it as mulch in his garder by covering the soil and cutting holes where he wanted plants. Zero weeds and a terrific garden were the result.

I have done it for decades. Works good.

The cardboard works good. Putting straw on top of it holds too many slugs in my garden.

I use lots of cardboard when planting pumpkins and squash. It works really well to keep weeds at bay, and will be rotted up by late fall.

No different than putting down straw. It's just carbon. Wouldn't bother tilling it if you're just using it in the walking paths between rows.

Tried it here and strong west winds would always find a way to peel it up and ruin everything.

It is different in that there are no seeds in cardboard.

Question for the guys that had a slug problem. Did you put anything on top of the cardboard and if so what?

Mainly referring to the tilling issue. But the no seeds thing is a nice benefit.

Slugs, I use cardboard mostly on the walkways so slugs aren't as bad in the actual beds. There's easy ways to handle the slugs.

I use newspaper in the paths with lawn clippings on top of it to keep it in place.

cardboard between the plant rows. I use old boards to hold the cardboard down where needed.
