I've watched that stuff many times and have yet to understand that sport
Doesn't help I can't speak Spanish. I assume it's a competition but I'd like to know what's the goal? How do you win. I've missed my dallies many times and my hand felt like it was that hot but never do I make any smoke like that.
Maybe it's just for show but from what I've watched there's a couple of other events each guy completes in.
Looks like it pretty much ruins the rope each time and I know if I had to buy a rawhide reita like that it would be well north $100.

I have seen that and dont get it either. i figured those were grass ropes. Looks to me like if they tried to stop anything it would break the rope. Which happens, a lot, in the videos. maybe they are using it like the drag in a fishing reel. at some point if everything works right they spur the horse and follow the roped animal.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Maybe they are grass Danny. I just assumed they were rawhide as that is what is tradition for the vaqueos. I know rawhide is the preferred for those fancy shots they take.

Maybe they sell them to the gringos to smoke afterwards...

I think they use cotton ropes most of the time. I had a classmate in college whose father-in-law competed in theses events and he said they wrap the horn in jute to get the smoke.
