Magnolia tripetala, commonly called umbrella magnolia or simply umbrella-tree, is a deciduous tree native to the eastern United States in the Appalachian Mountains, the Ozarks, and the Ouachita Mountains. The name "umbrella tree" derives from the fact that the large leaves are clustered at the tips of the branches forming an umbrella-shaped structure.

I have seen them in the Kiamichi River bottoms just East of Big Cedar and I’ve heard there are quite a few on Beech Creek. Interestingly enough, I have never seen any on Cucumber creek which is I’m sure where the creek got its name.

I heard the old timers sometimes used the cucumber tree rather than oak to age their whiskey.

Correct.
Used traditionally by Cree on the snow for goose hunting in spring.

There are small ones about size of your fist, you dip them in boiling water and it gives off a nice fresh pine smell for several days.A natural air freshener.
lasts for a long time, just dip again to refresh.
