I got an old timers gear up here in Alaska. Bought the entire estate of trapping goods. Hundreds of lure ingredients and glands I’m sorting through, all from back in the 50’s or so I guess. This one is stamped Authentic Materials. Smell is unreal. Open it and you smell it from 3 feet away.nothing like the synthetic stuff, that’s for sure.

It’s a tincture very deep reddish brown color.

I have some real Himalayan musk I was selling for $ 20 an ounce but I have no idea the real market value. The real stuff will smell up a whole room for days just by opening the lid it seems.

We still have the real thing readily available, although a bit pricey. But I will probably just keep using my current bottle of tincture as perfume because it smells so good it feels kind of sacrilegious to use it for lures. Also, I left the whole gland in the tincture (it's been about 1.5 years now) yet the color hasn't changed much after the first few weeks of infusion, and it's not really that dark (like whiskey, so paler than castoreum tincture). I also noticed that different people perceive this smell very differently. To me, it is pretty delicate, with lots of various sweet notes, but a friend said that according to her nose, it "stinks, like a scary animal".

I have some that is supposed to be the real stuff, but frankly I have my doubts. Because while I've never smelled any other verified "real tonquin" when I open this bottle and smell it I don't get any of the reactions everybody talks about getting to real tonquin.

Strengths can vary with authentic Musk Pod extraction results. The concentration that is made will greatly affect the end odor. Each who does his own tincture have their own formulation that they used or preferred. Some may have preferred a high-end ratio of solvent to the musk pods/grains. Others may have preferred a lesser volume of solvent to arrive at a more concentrated form of Tonquin Tincture.

Good musk pods may be tinctured, drained and re started once again as with good Asafoetida Gum. Or make a draw and add some more solvent to volume and continue to extract over time.

The answer of which tincture ratio one choses to use may lie in whether or not the end product was being sold for the retail market or for private formulation work. We always keep the best work close at hand as they say.

It all may be Authentic Tonquin and bears that label. However, the initial push and the shear volatile nature of the material will speak for itself as to its concentration. Side by side comparisons of distinction would be very clear to a seasoned individual and to some with distinct olfactory sense perception.

I agree danny. But some of those musks and oils can really make a big difference in an animals interest in a lure or bait. But I know you are aware of that fact also.

What is the preferred solvent for tonquin, alcohol like so much else that is tinctured?
