Where is the best place to find a 1,000 propane tank to buy so I can get propane quotes and not lock into one company while I rent their tank?

Any experience doing this? Hot tips and tricks?

Before buying one make sure it has a lot of time left on the certification. ALL propane tanks have an expiration date.

I have tanks from the 1950's that are filled regularly. Not a lot to go wrong with one but repairs are expensive. You want the tank to be under pressure when you look at one, I was told the tanks with end mounted valves are more expensive to fix. From what I'm seeing tanks have tripled in price compared to precovid.

I traded in my 500 a couple of years ago for a 1000 gallon installed. It cost almost double of what a 500 was.

I don't get a break on the amount of LP. Mostly I wait and call in the latter summer for quotes for the lowest on a fill.

It lasts me a year.

I buy from same outfit for years remember if you own the tank jobbers will fill there customers before you . I paid one time 50 dollars for the tank and at least around here there is not much difference in price. I am one to prefer service over a couple pennies

When we used propane at a former home, I bought an underground tank. Never had a problem during hurricane floods.

I called once to get a quote from another company. They wanted to charge me a fee for them to inspect my hot water heater, range, and gas logs. Would have taken many years to show a savings because of the inspection fee.

Maybe the various dealers do this to prevent price shopping.

An ASME tank may not have an expectation date. A DOT cylinder needs an inspection. There is a National standard for tanks and cylinder.

Farm sale. Tho everything is really high right now. Buy it on a trailer, they kinda suck to load and haul.

Sounds like you called AmeriGas. They tried that crap on me. Even tried to tell me I wasn’t even allowed to light my own pilots. Apparently they don’t understand NC Plumbing P1 licensing.

If you ever look to sell your house, different loan types have specific requirements on propane tanks. A bigger tank usually means great set backs from buildings and property lines.

Never heard of expiration date.
I have been using the same 1000 gallon tank since 1976 and it was used then.

We have a 1,000 gallon tank at the farm in NE. It has been there since before 1972. I can remember helping my mom slap a new coat of a paint on it a couple of times over the years.

So the company I'm with now, I rent the tank from them, sent me the summer fill rate sheet last year and I jumped on it and then it was cheaper to prepay for 1500 gallons or something like that. So I chose the the cheapest per gallon option that ended up being the most expensive b/c of how many gallons it was. Thought I did good, they came and filled me up. Then someone posted on FB about propane prices and reading all through that thread there were local people around me paying significantly less just using their summer fill program than I paid for the discount I was getting from my company. It kind tweetered me off a little and I decided to buy my own tank and then shop around and have whoever has the best price fill it when I need it. Anyway that's what I was thinking. Thanks for the comments. I appreciate your input / help.

I cook with propane, have a propane dryer in the house and use a propane furnace for backup heat. I heat with wood in the winter. Doing this, I only have to fill my 350 gallon tank once a year. I usually shoot for August, when the price seems to be cheapest.
