I’m in search of a new or lightly used compact tractor.
Want to get one that will do well with a grapple bucket
And run a skidding winch and a mid mount snow plow
Anyone have any time tested tractors they would recommend.
Thanks

Not new but I love my Kubota L35. 35 hp and weighs in at about 6,000 lbs with the loader and backhoe. It has been my most useful machine and given me outstanding service for twenty-plus years now.

My recommendation is Kubota.

Eh...wot?

I’ve got a New Holland 2030 Boomer 4WD with loader. 31hp diesel. It’s not for sale, but you’re welcome to test drive if you want to get a feel for the model/size etc.

I recommend you buy a brand that has a local dealer for parts and service. It sucks to have a tractor setting waiting on a little part that is not available locally when your trying to get something done before a rain. I bought a John Deere because there is a dealer 11 miles away.

This is of some importance. Not number one but its up there.
I have bought 2 Deere tractors, both used, about 10 years old or so when i got them and with relatively low hours.
I wanted to avoid all the unnecessary emissions stuff. The simpler the better.
First one was about 45 hp, a 4610, the one I have now is 31 hp, a 2720.
I have used the same grapple with both tractors. Don't use the mid mower or a snow plow so I can't help you there.
I do a bit of logging mostly with firewood logs cut at 8ft using the grapple. Personally I would never skid a log.
Larger 8ft logs, say a 20" sugar Maple log is pretty much max for the 2720. You can lift it using the curl but not the lift.
I like the smaller tractor myself as its easier to get around in the woods.
I have nothing bad to say about the 2720 its been a great little tractor.
Biggest downside to a deere and it might not be unique to deere is the prices for parts are ridiculous. The kubota guys will have to chime in and let us know if they are the same.
Luckily for me I haven't needed to buy any parts in a long time.
Its not hard to find a smaller compact tractor like OP is looking for used with low hours. When I was looking for my last one I found several with less than 100hrs that were 5-10 yrs old just like new yet.
And usually they are in very good shape as it seems alot of the dudes that buy these things just put around on them putting on approx 25 hrs per year and baby them.

Also don't forget the attitude of the dealer. Local JD support is horrible. John Deere Dealership 4 hours from home is great to work with.

Whenever a John Deere owner complains about the cost of parts, Kubota says, "hold my beer." grin

I've always heard John Deere parts were salty but have never bought any so I have no basis for comparison. I do know that Kubota parts aren't cheap.

I recently replaced the seal kit in my dipper stick cylinder. Kubota wanted $120.00 for a couple of pieces of plastic and a few O rings. They said the part was obsolete. I took it to my local tractor repair guy (Amish) and he made what was needed to repack the cylinder for less than a quarter of what Kubota wanted.

I'm convinced that those orange and blue boxes the Kubota parts come in are extremely valuable. They must be because the parts inside of them aren't worth anywhere near what they are charging.

Thankfully, my L35 has taken very little in the way of repairs, even after twenty-plus years of rough service.

Eh...wot?

I'm running a new L3902- not enough hours to be considered "Time Tested".
Most of my recommendations for Kubota came from current and previous JD owners and T-Man posts- so far it's been a great choice. I really like the Skidsteer standardized loader attachments, several tractor models have it, JD did not, I picked up a set of CID forks and probably use them more than the bucket.
You will need to add a 3rd function valve to the Kubota Compact line-up to control the grapple, not sure on the skidding winch?
Good Luck

Guess Ill be the lone dog putting in the plug for Massey Fergusons. In fairness, ive only put about 15 hours on it...had 235 when I purchased it. So far, so good, but its a little bigger size than what you are looking for. Friend has a 25hp MF that he uses around his place for working around the horse barns and has been happy with it. There are a lot of good tractors out there, but as others have said, the dealer can make or break the brand.
