The first work on a "from scratch" stock is the scariest. I know there are a couple guys on here who stock black powder stuff, and I respect them for their fine work. Doing one from scratch has little to do with a semi inlet, because in the early stages you don't want to get too aggressive taking out wood, but it takes more time. I bed mine, but a lot of the true masters did such fine work that they didn't feel the need.

I'm still about 3/8" from setting in the top metal, then I'll do the floorplate and trigger guard, and lastly the magazine box. If I take off too much wood somewhere, sometimes you can make a good fix, but it is best to avoid those things early on. Running a chisel through grainy walnut is sporty at times. I'm planning on a shadowline cheekpiece and a bit of cast, but want to keep a simple look, then maybe a classic point pattern for the checkering.... nothing too fancy.

It's like getting a crown fitted at the dentist. Go slowly until things fit right, but thank God for bedding.

Too bad my other blank is long enough for a flinter, but it has a slight curve at the barrel end, so I'll keep it for another gun.

Thanks for looking,

Pete

Great progress. Slow but sure is definitely the order of the day to minimize mistakes. When Dad and I start from blanks (which most builds have been lately), it's always measure twice, sleep on it, measure again, then go slow, measuring the entire time.

Looking forward to watching the progress on this one.

Thanks for posting. If you are willing to keep updating us on that project I'd love to see it.

I can't imagine how difficult inletting must be. I look forward too seeing how this project progresses.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
