Someone that would help you out , support you when your down. And just be there when you need someone to talk too.
I only have a few that I call true friends.
Than again that's all I need.
I'm there for them when they need something.
Let me sugar coat this

The bare minimum is a requirement for something other than a 'friend'. The qualities I require from someone to be my friend are not found often. Nothing wrong with knowing many people fairly well thou (acquaintances)...if they treat you nice then treat them better...if they treat you badly then avoid them after that if possible/if avoidance is not possible then treat them worse than they treated you.
Way to many folks have alcohol/drug/emotional issues today to even be considered for either position. Choose wisely.
Biggest problems with people today other than drug/alcohol is a lack of honest self evaluation, self importance and inconsideration. Most people think they are way more than they really are..but many people are pretty tolerable for shorter periods of time. Most important thing to know when dealing with people is they see the world thru their eyes. The chronic liar thinks everyone is a chronic liar....for example. Figure out how someone sees the world and you know how they think. Then you know what to expect from them.
If your a good honest person you can get really hurt thinking that everyone is that way because not many people are. Accept life and people on life's terms and make the most of relationships..be kind unless it becomes time to not be kind.
I have 4 very good friends.

How many do you have? Everybody
What is your criteria for someone being a friend? Anybody willing to be helped
I was super popular in 5th grade and had a dozen friends until I made a comment that I guess was taboo and had zero friends the next day,
I swore I'd never have a friend again.
I broke that oath three times.
All three ended up like the first time.
I guess I'm curious what your bare minimum requirements for a friend are?

I've had friends that I can remember having for more than fifty years. Quite a few actually. These are friends that I've stayed in touch with and shared my life's moments ( good and bad) we support each other and rejoice and cry for each other. Some of us toured with the Grateful Dead and are getting together and going in a couple weeks to a a show from Dead & Co. Closest friends that I would trust with my families life I can name 3.
It's too bad yotetrapper that you've not had such individuals to share you're life's moments. True friends are a blessing and a little give and take is needed from both sides.

I have a few friends
I could break it down I to
work friends :a few people I work with have worked with for a long time we are friends and chat at work go out for lunch , but if they left work for someplace else I wouldn't keep in touch been at the same place 25 years. had a few work friends leave and didn't keep in touch.
Organization friends , people I know through organization's I belong to like the rifle club , we get together and shoot and stuff but don't generally go to each others houses for supper or meet outside of club context.
friend friends by far the smallest number
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

A good friend is like family.they help when they can if needed, and vice versa, and are nice people. Someone who is dishonest will not be a friend of mine.

"Friends" is a relative term. In my old age, I have 2 true friends: my wife, and my dog. If I'm on my death-bed, there's about 12 others that would be on my bucket-list to talk with.

Jerry and my daughter's are my best friends.
90% of.my acquaintances.and friends are men.
Quite frankly I don't do well.with women
Most are too prissy.and petty for me and backstabbing. For.my taste
I don't do well talking about finger nail polish and hair styles.
I can clean up ok when I want.too..I just don't want roo that often.lol
I've grown up around men and in school i was in. FFA and.most of the people in it .back then were guys
Ive had 1 what id call best.friend for 4 or 5 years but she turned out to be a back stabbing witch so after that I figured out I was better on my own..
I'll do anything for neighbors and friends but I aint lettin any woman too close.
No way

Interesting topic. Trouble with people is every dang one I've ever met is seriously flawed. I'm even coming to disappointing conclusion I maybe too. Lol. Expectations are killers in relationships and being able to judge what you expect from others is a good safe guard in a relationship. Prideful people and people that seek a lot of praise or attention are the hardest for me to be around. I d9nt know how many friends I have but I try to be a good friend to most people when the opportunity or need arises. But most people will disappoint you if you expect too much from them. I'm pretty guarded with personal things. I like to help and serve others but I'm learning to do it with no expectations and it has helped to bring more enjoyment and less disappointment.
