We have a really good breeding population in the area, but these have always been one of the most difficult ducks to photograph.
Very wary and like big open sloughs with not much cover to hide. Drakes are everywhere but no hens to be found which is a good thing this time of year.

Just beautiful pics. My favorite after Wood Ducks. What equipment did you use?

Great photography Tray. I think Pintails are one of the neatest looking ducks there are. For geese, I'd say the White Fronts or "Specks" are at the top of the list too.

Very nice pictures! I always look for a stray pintail mixed in with mallards when hunting fields.

Nice pics as usual, Any pics of drake shovelers?
Always thought those were one of the most vivid colored spring migrators.

Spring migration it (almost) common to see them in nw/mn.
Fall migration it's rare.
Nice pics.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

I read a study of radio tagged Pintails flying from the Dakotas in the evenings to feed in Louisiana all night and fly back the next morning. I know when hunting in Arkansas we had a few days of nothing but flocks of Pintails coming into the dekes. Only one each makes for a boring hunt, lol. We figured we’d get those limits and wait on the mallards that never showed. And I agree, one of the best looking ducks out there. The only word that comes to mind is elegant.

Drakes sprigs are certainly the most pretty amongst the puddle ducks.
Really nice photos Tray.

Only a Minnesota guy would ask for Shoveler pics, LOL.
They are really a cool bird. Very striking and contrasting colors.

Give me a little time and I will post some, they haven’t been one of my target birds this year but I have a few old ones and might go try and get some yet this spring.

Ha Ha, the shoveler legends lives!,..I would get me a springer but the federalists would frown on that!
We do have a bit of chagrining in our camp for those that,..well inadvertently mis-identify!

I look forward or what you might offer.

I call Shovelers “the other greenhead” First time hunting in Arkansas no one even grabbed their guns when a flock came in. Being from SWGA and having nothing but Wood Ducks to shoot at I said well I’m shooting the next flock that comes in. Now mind you, I’m in a “club” and they are mostly “purist”…Drake Mallards then fill in with Teal, Pintails, or Gadwall. That morning the head honcho was in our group, but off in the brush instead of the pit.
The next flock that came in I dropped three “greenheads” lol. Before the dog was even sent he was calling the blind just a cussing at whoever shot the blankityblank shovelers! They told him it was me and he had a few more choice words and hung up. Ten seconds later the phone rang again and he told them to tell me “Blankityblank great shooting!” I’ve never gotten a triple again, but did get a double the next flock and finished out my limit.
The best news was they tasted great.
