What is your opinion of using only lure for fox or only bait for coyote? If so what do you use?

I only use lure and urine for both, no bait ever. I feel that using bait attracts too many non-target species like coon and possum.

Eh...wot?

I’d love to use urine, but all that results in is a tripped trap. For dirt holes it’s always a bait and lure. Flat sets it’s lure only.

On bait, hard to beat a slight taint piece of beaver here.. not much on lure unless it’s a call lure, that case gusto here.

Have pretty much always just used just lure for both. Did use some skunk for bait way back when fox were we worth something. I have also put a little tained venison out for coyotes.

Danny, I ordered a bucket of preserved bobcat meat and added some “ingredients” as well. I mixed several jars with different ingredients. While all caught, one stood out more. Even my son asked what was in a particular jar because it caught more for him than others. I guess my bait is actually a lure too.

I'd say most prepared bait would be the same way. Maybe some more than others.

I use both baits and lures sometimes both at a set and sometimes one or the other at a set. Both have there advantages and disadvantages. If I had to chose only one I'd not hesitate to chose a good prepared bait for coyotes. I believe the coyotes can somewhat perceive the volume at a set and volume has its advantages. This is in general there's always exceptions and unique situations.

My preference is a lure and red fox urine. It works for me.

Doesn't really matter to me. If it's a good lure or bait they'll serve their purpose for both species.

My opinion is this. A trapper would miss out on catching alot of fox and coyote! 1 lure or 1 bait for either canine is not a wise move. As a lure or bait, whether be it food, curiosity or territorial will create a different response from day to day with both fox and coyote. Not to mention habituating the animals to the attractors that you have chosen. For me? Personally, it is an impossible question to answer. Sorry MinkGuy.

No coyotes so can’t speak to that but I’m a lure only fox trapper to a point and then it’s nothing but snares.

Carmans canine call lure. Just wet and stem the size of a tooth pick about a 1/4 inch. Catch every thing native to Pennsylvania

The one bait that I have had some success with is the stomach of fox , coyote or cat. I have made and thrown out tons of my mixes. My homemade lure works but I alternate with Derricks, lure is over bait.

Both have their place on my predator line that is mostly coyotes and cats. In dh sets I’m mostly putting in a bait that I’ve found to get a strong reaction and a shot of pure black coyote pee. If the ground is too hard for a dh then I will mostly be running a grub stake/staked hide/beaver foot flat set with a food lure. I’ll mix in various glands depending on how i feel, but food is my top producer

Deer or beaver liver and fox urine for me. I mix it up with a few good lures but if I could only go with one bait or lure it would be this.

I Always make doubles for red fox. Usually use a paste bait in one dirt hole and a lure in the other. I think guys tend to use too much bait and lure. It does not take much, a K9’s nose is impressive.

Put a tiny speck of lure on a rock in your yard and watch your dog

When I targeted coyotes, Powder River Paste Bait was always my go to.
