I'm cleanin' out the place for our May 2024 closing. Came upon a few old bottles of home brewed wine. 1977 chokechery.. Missing my notes, but, holly crap this stuff is probably the best wine that has ever touched my lips. I wish I could describe it, but, all I can say is this stuff is beyond great.

The wine held up better than the cork. The first glass was out of this world. The rest is being strained through a coffee filter to remove the cork particles. Sure hope that doesn't detract from overall quality. For me, best wine, ever.

Choke cherry lasts better than most other wines. I knew an old fella that made nothing but chokecherry wine for years. I tasted his wine many times, and while too sweet for my tasts, I could appreciate the quality of his making. He barrel aged all of it, and said there was a lot of it that was 25 years old. I made some that is closing in on twenty, still in the carboy. Will have to try it again, as it was still too bitey when I last sampled it at around 14.

My parents made chockcherry wine when I was a kid, when my dad died in 78 ma stopped making it, there was still a lot stored in the basement, literally gallons and gallons of the stuff, much of it in 10 gallon oak casks (50) some in those old 1/2 gallon juice bottles (237) and a lot in smaller bottles like pop bottles

Funny thing is neither drank wine, ma would have a beer now and then and dad it was crown royal brandy and an occasional whiskey, the wine was given as gifts to whoever wanted some and many did

I still have 4 of the casks and about a dozen of the juice bottles, and all I can say it only gets better with age, and the only thing that can ruin it is if air gets into it due to bad sealing

By the way one of those casks is labeled 1958 the year they got married, when my son get married later this year I plan on broaching it and serving it at the wedding, I think they would appreciate it, my parents had a good run and hopefully it will pass on to my son and his lady

Enjoy it for as long as it last And consider it a reward for taking care it through out the years Far to often our payback is much less than what we put into it .
