They came in last evening, quite a few of them calling. Very late this year ( almost 3weeks) love listening to those birds. Must have been the cold spring that delayed them.

Was a bunch of them going here last evening too. Had one in pines so close to the campfire I could hear a click at end of each call. Never heard that before or at least noticed?? My son said it was only maybe 20 ft away in the tree. Yet none of us could see it. I've actually only seen them few times in my life. Went was a kid there was one sat every night on top of power pole in the yard at old cottage. Couple years ago was one used the roof of my sister's gazebo for several nights.

Been hearing them and seeing them here for at least 6 weeks. I leave the house at 5am and count the ones I see along the road. Average is 15 on the way to work. A few mornings I have counted over 20.

pretty common here 30 years ago. been several years since i heard one. no bugs. looking at the pole light at a boatramp last night very very few bugs. couple decades ago it would have been a huge ball of them circling it with bats regularly flying by. not now. i dont think thats a good thing

Last year, I could often hear several eastern whip-poor-wils here. I have not heard any here this year. They seem to be fairly rare in my part of Ohio. I have a friend who lives in Washington County, Ohio near Vincent, that has huge numbers of eastern whip-poor-wils on his farm.

I think the nest raiders play a big factor with them just like the turkeys i see a direct relation with both turkey and whipoorwill populations. Just my 2 cents.

They are bug eaters. All the insecticides sprayed here has really lowered bug numbers. I think that has impacted a lot of species.

The only one of the Nightjars that I hear around here ( Southast corner of Alabama) is the Chuck-will's-widow> https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chuck-wills-widow/overview

I don’t even know if we have Whip-poor-wills here…SWGA. All I’ve ever heard is the Chuck-wills-widow

They are not as common here as the Chuck-wills-widow, but I've heard a few occasionally.

Over here we have both as well but Whippoorwills are much more common. Got one hollering outside the back door right now. Hear them every night during the spring and summer.

used to have lots of them here. I haven'[t heard or seen one in years now. I miss hearing them.

I had never thought of the ag folks using insecticides as a reason for them leaving, but makes sense. I always blamed the yotes and over abundance of coons for their demise.

kids used to catch lightning bugs in the summer. dont have them now. just one here and there. bug population is way down. hardly any june bugs either. i suspect that has contributed to the decline in turkeys and quail also

I can see predatation of nest being a problem, I've found a few nest while searching for morrels. The females just lay their eggs on the forest floor on a couple of leaves. Sitting by a campfire in the back yard listening to the whip poor wills, coyotes howling, and owls hooting away while sipping a cold one makes one grateful to be so blessed.

There were at least 3 around our place a couple of nights ago. I wasnt a 100% sure what was making the sound as we were setting around the fire in the backyard. Cool sounding bird, listened to a couple of audio files on my phone and it sounded like what we were hearing.

You might be on to something. We have lots of whippoorwills, june bugs, and lightening bugs.
