It would be interesting for someone to go back 5-10 years and correlate the FHA May average for western cats to the average price at Fallon (or any of the other big western sales) for the following year. In other words, FHA average was $250; I would wager Fallon/Prineville average will be about the same next spring.

Disregard. It wasn't that interesting. I did the numbers and while there is some correlation, there is more disparity than similarity.

I don't know how high FHA valued muskrats. I have not been able to find those numbers. As time goes on it does not matter as much to me either, because when you are trying to sell stuff for too much above the market it does not move. This will be the 3rd sale that my few rats have been bought back. I have sold just shy of 600 the last two seasons for about $3.70-$3.72 and the rats I sent to FHA were a tad better (in grade) then the ones I sold. Yes as someone stated it is an education and learning is important to me. I can afford to let a $100 worth of fur ride it out to increase my knowledge on how to best market my fur within the general fur market.
I know several recommend tanning and selling etc. It is amazing how many fur items I saw just at our district rondy. It is interesting that we are encouraging harvesters to invest more time and money into low cost fur when one of the reasons fur is low in price is demand is WAY, WAY down.

I recently sold some tanned rats for 35 ea.
For the minimal effort to tan the handful I had(they go right into the pickle directly after skinning and fat removal) it was well worth it.
In fact I could have sold more if I had them,and the summer selling circuit is not even here yet.

I gotta take a quick course on tanning. The Trubond kits are ok for me but it’s not a nice soft tan like a taxidermist. I’m probably not breaking them properly.
I’m happy with my $500 for my first fur check, next year will be better……..more fur anyway, already doubled my beaver count. Coulda had more but it’s too warm, next fall.
