I read a threat on a 270 rifle so thought I would share my 270 and why I own it. This is my 270 Steyr. The most accurate rifle I have ever owned. I purchased this 270 rifle because I wanted the same caliber Jack O'Conner had. Jack was my mentor. Not thru personally meeting him but thru his book "Sheep and Sheep Hunting". My ram pictured below was taken from the same area and I believe the same genetics as the ram Jack harvested. His ram was harvested near the Wyoming/Montana border. My ram I harvested near the Montana/Wyoming border in the same general area. I did not harvest my ram with this 270 but a Remington 7mm mag I purchased at a pawn shop. At the time the 7mm was my universal rifle and purchased with every dime I could afford to spend.

Very nice, if I was ever forced to leave my .257s behind, .270 would be a great possible next choice.

Cool story and pics.
I got my 270 because due to my health issues I wanted something lighter than my 700 308 but still effective overall for big game. Got it during the holidays a few years back for a steal. My daughter carried out on her first elk hunt but she froze. I used it my mule deer buck a couple years back using the ammo i posted in the other thread. 1 shot and it dropped. Small exit wound. Plan on using it again on my elk hunt.

My dad used a 308. Worked good. The stuff he shot was dead too.

Same here. My dad mainly used my 308. Lots of animals have been taken with it. I love it but since my health issues started it gets heavy very fast. I might bring it out this year.

Not debating what caliber works best in this post just posting a story about my rifle.

Yup slick appreciated. All calibers have weak and strong points and in between. Its up to each one of us to decide what fits the bill for us.

I have that rifle in the 30-06. I would prefer the 270 though. That rifle has the smoothest action that I have ever felt. When operating the bolt it feels like it is running on ball bearings. Im sure yours is the same.

ELDX may not work for every use. What I read on the ELDX ammo is it depends on how you use it. I bought this ammo to try on long range mule deer hunting. I put this box of ammo in the photo for a visual. It's one of the manufacturers I have. My go to ammo has always been Federal with a nosler partition bullet.

I have never harvested anything with this rifle or the ELDX ammo. Shortly after I purchased this rifle I had a severe knee injury so I cannot hunt the mountains like I used to. I enjoy owning the rifle and may give it a go on something easier just not sure what yet.

I never met a gun I didnt like. Some I like more than others. Was a good day when I told my uncle I could use his help getting an elk to my great uncles house where we butchered at. Great uncle had a real nice setup. Uncle said 270 still wasn't big enough for elk, I must have been closer than the 300 yards I guessed the shot was. Have taken them at every bit of 400 too since then. Same uncle told me my 300 win mag was to much rifle when i bought it. He was wrong about that too. I never did convince him that a rifle without 30-06 on the barrel might just be a mighty nice meat maker.

I bought the "plain Jane" Remington 78 Sportsman in .270 about 1980 or so.
It can't help the fact that it is accurate as heck.

I have a Remington 721 in the .270. 24” barrel.
I found it 35 years ago off the end of the used rifle rack, small gun shop. Dirtiest, grungiest gun in the place. The bore looked dirty but good. I gave a hundo straight up for it. Brought it home and simply cleaned the beejeezus out of it. It really blossomed nicely steel and wood for an A model. Bore polished up as new.

I will put it up against any new or old, any make, as far as accuracy that thing is a true tack driver.

Good story Slick, good caliber.

I've hunted with a 270 since 1979 and reloaded for it over 35 years. A very capable cartridge. My most accurate reload is ; 54.5 gr H4831SC , WLR primer , Rem brass , Hornady 130 gr Interlock bullet. Every rifle is typically different for the best recipe for a reload. Will be working up a new hunting round for a Barnes copper solid (TSX).

The '06 spawned some good wildcats. I've been using a 25-06 the last couple years for Whitetails and it does a fine job.

There is such a thing as genetics. Heredity is the passing of genetic information and traits. It occurs in bighorn sheep in Montana. The mount is an original rocky mountain bighorn sheep. It has the same genetics as the ram that Jack O'Connor harvested. That was my point. To explain it further here in Montana we have two different gene pools of sheep. One is from the Sun River pool and the other is the original. Most of all the rams harvested are transplants from the Sun River herd. They have a larger horn mass. The rams that score in the B&C book from Montana are from the Sun River gene pool herd.
