Blue-wings are typically the last duck to show up here in the spring and they usually nest a little later than everything else. They are by far the most common duck we have in the area from late spring thru early fall, then they are first to head south.
They are fairy easy ducks to get close to for photos but so fast that it’s difficult to get focused on them.
I have dozens of pics but will just post a few at a time to spread it out.

Thank you Tray, for such nice shots. It must be also really challenging to catch that beautiful wing iridescence just right , as well as action.

Love those blue wings. One of my most memorable hunts was chasing blue wings in a South Florida dairy. They were feeding in the sand trap of the dairy. Shot them on nearly dry concrete. The steel shot would make sparks when it hit the concrete. Shot my limit in two pulls of the trigger

Gotta live up to the nickname...

I have some pics from a couple years ago, I will do a post on them sometime. I haven’t seen hardly any this year so I’m not sure if migration skipped us. They do nest here most years so I’m not sure where they went.

Love to hunt Blue-wings but we only get a crack at them for a week or two then they are gone.

Nice pics. All drakes...are the hens nesting/with this year's broods or is the population out of whack?

Hens are mostly sitting by now, Drakes are really moving around a lot scouting for any remaining hens. There are some but cameraman tends to focus on the color. LOL

When they opened our waterfowl season on 1sept we have a 3-7 day window in hunting them here. Before our seasons opened 3 week Sept and they were long gone.
Back in the 1960 one of the banders had the longest band return on a BWT from Libau Manitoba to 1/2 way down into Argentina a year later a Artic Tern passed that record for distance traveled.

on the 4th frame you can see a feather louse holding onto the white scapulia feathers

WI has an early Teal season that was a popular decision. Many biologists and ecologists are not as appreciative of the season as they are seeing several non teal shot during that early season. Enough that actiona will be taken remains to be seen.

We don’t get an early season in SD, we do get 2 bonus BWT for the first 16 days of the season.
