I was happy to read you had a job you can make a career out of. Old grouchy guys seen a lot of youngins come and go. You stick with it, do what your told, and I bet old grouchy guy will be a good teacher.

Congrats to you Wolfdog91. X2 to what Danny said. Old guys get sick of puttin time in to the young new guys. Who just quit or get an attitude. Do as your told. Pay attention. You will make long lasting friends with the older guys. Besides they are the best teachers

If only I was told to do something . He'll legit just walk off without speaking a word or just kinda sit there looking at something till I ask for the third time what he wants to do . No getting the classic " old but stern grouchy mentor" vibe from him at all. If anything he's more like the guy I delt with at my factory job who get mad at me for taking notes and just point blank told me he prefers to run new guys off.
But I prefer not to jump to conclusions. We will see . There's a lot of movement in this company as far as moving around so if anything I can just put in a transfer request and eveyones been telling me it's no big deal at all and pretty much the norm. Especially for deckhands trying to get their transfers like me smile

I'm gonna say this: Crew members from different States don't usually get along with others on a tug / barge. e.g., NC'ins don't like VAer's and neither like Northerners etc. They all think they're the best that ever worked on the water. It's one of the things ya just live with while on the boat. Don't go outta your way to be friendly, let them deal with THEIR "personality" issues. :-)

Like no communication . I'm trying to be helpful and not a annoying and I get getting a feel for the new guy but idk I'm getting a weird vibe here compared to the other tow boats I've helped on and crews we've been meeting.
But he's not really making life hard or anything so guess I can't complain too much. Definitely have spent longer doing more work with people alot worse laugh
That being said though some of these older guys riding over have been complimenting me alot . The old engineer fella said he'd love to have me working with him if I ever get bored of snatching wires smile I'm making the most of it regardless, will also say, had frog legs for the first time in forever today in the galley. Boy that was a nice treat grin

When I first started handling fur I use to ask the buyer tons of questions when we were riding along. He was polite and tried to answer .One day I think he said something about so many ? Looking back on it now I must have been a pain in the butt. I think you can learn as much or more with your eyes than your mouth. Some dudes just are the silent type. With him sounds like that type. He is not much for conversation. Watch you may learn a lot from him.
I know you did not pull up and go gigging for frogs. So did you cook them or did someone else? I love me some frog legs. Not to many in Montana. grin

Maybe nobody else likes dealing with the dude either and that's why you are there. If he wants you to do something he will have to tell ya otherwise go about your business best you can. You may gain a lot of respect from others if you can handle him. If you can handle him you may be stuck there for a while but when you want something from the company you will be first in line to get it. And that in itself may be worth it.
