Granddaughter caught a snakehead this morning. Neither one of us knew what it was it first. After a bit of googling we figured it out.

Good eating! Getting invasive down here. I’ve never caught one but a neighbor fishes for them regularly and I’ve tried it. Cool catch! Watched an episode of Meateater last week where they targeted them, in the Potomac if I recall.

Now you's tell me!

We didn't know what it was, so we released it. Only after googling it did we realize they are an invasive specie that fishermen are encouraged to kill. And that they are good to eat!

Granddaughter was very happy to have caught it though.

Don't care if you eat them or not, they need killing. Just throwing them up on the bank (without chopping them in half) isn't enough.

Maiden Creek, below the dam. I fished that lake and river system hard decades ago. I haven't been back in a long time. My granddaughter is into fishing so I started taking her there. Things sure have changed. After doing some more research I found there is a thriving population of snakeheads in the river and the dam. Members of one forum were saying how the "snakehead bite is on now."

If we'd have known what it was and that they are good to eat, we would have filleted it. After reading about them I learned they can live for days out of water and actually migrate over land short distances.

This one got a pass due to my lack of knowledge, won't happen again.

Haven't caught any yet in central PA. I am sure it's just a matter of time. Thanks for sharing the pics.

According to some of the stuff I've been reading about them they have spread far and wide since an "accidental" release in Maryland twenty-some years ago.
