So y'all remember me asking about this lil mauser Sporter a few weeks ago ? Well my little brother fell in love with the dang thing and for his graduation present he said he wants it to be his first firearm purchase with his money and all he'd want from me is some ammo lol. Y'all think I'm bad when it comes to stuff he's next level grin
Any how quick ammo question. This surplus Turkish stuff any good as far as not blowing your face off and being able to reload the brass ? I mean all in all this stuff is daily cheap so I could always just spend a few more and some nicer stuff but I know him and he's gonna wanna plink all day so yeah. Anyhow you appreciate a lil advice if y'all ain't too busy smile also ADC you'll be happy to know where probably gonna put a Vortex Crossfire on it since it's got scope mounts grin I know you really like them lil scopes wink smile

A lot of those old actions became sporterized after the war made into some nice rifles.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Off the top of my head, 8x57 bores can range from 318 to 323 so it may be worth slugging the bore and check the bore diameter.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I'm sure you're already aware older surplus often used corrosive primers and immediate barrel scrubbing is the rule if shooting that.

Not sure on the suitability for reloading though if corrosive.

Yeah ader dealing with our mosin I had a feeling we'd have a similar deal with this one.that being said it's got. Very nice and crisp bore so if anything we'll run cast for it but definitely will be slugging smile

if it were me I would stick to the PPU soft points for loaded ammo, they shot the best of what we had and then you have a soft point for hunting and no concern of over pressure or needing to clean right away.
if 196gr at 2500fps doesn't do it go home

the Romanian is also supposed to be safe to use

The damage has already been done when the stock was cut down and it was drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Shoot it as is or use it as a donor action for a custom build.

That Turkish surplus ammo will be Berdan primed so the brass is one and done. I'd be leary of any of it anyway due to it's age, how it's been stored and QC in general. I'd pull a few rounds just to see if anything poped up that caught my eye and to see and and smell the powder. Buy a hundred pieces of new brass or some of that PPU hunting rounds then you'll have brass to load with cast.

my son and I were jus having the what is sacrilege to sporterize discussion yezterday

if it is already molested and your going to make it more useful to you , have at it

if it is not useful the way it is , have at it

if it has no real value like a Carcono have at it , but the requirment is you need to make it more useful and less expensive to do than just buying the goal.

but if you could easily sell it for more than it would cost to buy the hunting rifle you desire , don't spend a pile of time and money destroying a good shape original rifle to make a half attempt at what you were wanting

a friend re-chambered a MAS-36 in 450 bushmaster , IA guy while they could use strait wall cartriges

it looks identical , but is in a cartridge he can buy off the shelf , he had a gun smith make him a new barrel to the original contour

that is sporter done right , it adds value for him to that gun , he uses it to hunt deer now it still upsets some but they don't own it and hey they are French gun lovers they already have a bit of crazy.

if you are in someplace where new rifles are near impossible to get but can rebuild old , the important part is they be more useful than what you started with

in the US we think of original military dress as issued oe close too it as most useful because of the many service rifle competitions and the collector value and the ease of access to new accurate off the shelf hunting and SD guns.

there is one more , if you are a prohibited person and it is what you have for whatever reason , I get why you would do it , but you obviously already made a bunch of bad life decisions what's one more on the pile. and those are really the people we dislike for sporterising perfectly good guns , but heck we probably already dislike them for their bad life decisions and how they hurt others any way.

Put some in museums for history and convert as many of the rest to sporters that you want and no harm done. Someone did a nice job on that one.
