I’m pretty sure I’ve got gar stripping my trot lines,,, I decided to bait with crawdads thinking the gar would not mess with them… whatever is stripping my lines took my crawdads too.. I’m running 6/0 eagle claw circle hooks,,, and they are getting around the hooks somehow

Drop down inside of the hooks . If turtle you would catch one . They cleaning all of your lines ? What time you baiting them ? If to early before dark and using anything but bluegill then blue gills will clean the hooks

Use some 3/4lb live bullheads, they'll swim away from them nibblers and big flatheads will suck them right up. AND keep your bait down 6" off the bottom.

Go gar fishing; no hook needed. Below is a link to the how I used to catch gar. I was fishing from the bank using an eleven foot long surf rod. My technique was quite a bit different than that shown in the video. The fraying of the nylon rope is the important part.

Everything is stripped, even live bluegill about 4-5 inches gone.. I’ve hooked them through the back dorsal fin.. and even tried a technique where you take scissors and cut the tail fin off and then hook them there,,,, I’m using 2 , 1/2 inch nuts for weights to keep the bait towards the bottom. Even crawdads hooked through the tail have been stripped. I’m rebaiting around 6-7 pm.

we always baited trotlines with crawdads and jack uglies and never had trouble with anything stripping the bait off. But the jig poles had to be baited right before dark because the gar would strip them

Get you some bullheads and hook them up through the roof of their mouth, just behind their "teeth". 8-12" channel cats work good too.

I’ve never cared for those circle hooks, but I know a lot of people have very good luck with them, I prefer the plain style it seems like they “hook” better for me.

X2 I really like the octopus style hooks for set lines.

I just finished watching a video on YouTube where a fella was using rubber bands wrapped around his crawdads body,, then putting the hook through the rubber band. Helps keep your bait lively and cuts down on critters stealing your bait.
