If it’s not drained for winter the pumps will break check the pump case for any cracks.

one of the most common reasons people get rid of pressure washers is that the pump gets damaged be it by running without water , freezing , or other the good news is he has a running engine something in the valve body probably came loose and it isn't allowing any water though , in most valves open and close allowing the water in before pressurizing it if you can identify the pump it would give you a better idea when you find a schematic of the pump what might be the problem, not sure what would be available for parts so many of those are throw away pumps not sure what your paying for starter line locally it was like a dollar a foot or more here , I get it they have it in stock and you need it they should make something https://www.amazon.com/Stens-146-915-True-Starter-100-Feet/dp/B004HSBKJQ?ref_=ast_sto_dpthis is 9/64ths it seems to cover all the mid size chain saws to 7-8hp small engines I come across decently well , it is strong stuff it you can pull it with your hand your unlikely to break this stuff and it is really handy to have around he probably wants to ask when they last started it and had it been stored any where it could have frozen since then

Just replaced the pump on my pressure washer yesterday (a small world aye?) I have a troybuilt about 15 years old. I got a new lower pump off Amazon for $80. My old one had a crack. 3 Bolts, 5 minutes and it's as good as new.

I am a slow learner sometimes. Ruined 2 pumps in 4 winters before I was smart enough to learn why they did not work in the spring. Now my washer is stored in a heated area for the Kansas winter.

I didn't need much for a pressure washer , car washing and boat cleaning and stuff the hose will all reach
I bought a little electric one because my hose and my extension cord both need to hook up to the house and it makes it really easy to store the pressure washer in the basement since I have no other heated storage

You beat to the punch I was going to post why my no soap coming out? The tube conect water coming out but no soap. If I have a high pressure nozzle on mine, very little soap will come out. If I put the soaker nozzle on, soap comes out big time. Not quite sure why that is, but you may want to give that a try.

I don't think it's cracked. I had one freeze once and when water was hooked to it it freely ran out of the crack. It did have some rusty water come out of it when it did flow through. Guess I will l9ok for numbers and try to find a new pump.
The old mower he moved to working on is a 7.75hp Husqvarna . Put a new pull cord on it drained gas put in turns over but not firing. He took off the air box and the carb is extremely corroded. I can find similar one on line but the hole in the air box is different and some the fule line comes in on the wrong side. Get the model number off the pump. It will be on there It will probably have two numbers. One on the lower unit and one on the upper unit. Get those two numbers and look on Amazon. They will have one. The model of the pressure washer probably doesn't matter. They mostly all use a few different models of pump.

learning to fix stuff is good , learning when it costs more than it is worth is it's own education
have them keep track of their time and parts cost in a log , the education of doing it all is great , learning what your inputs and outputs are is the next lesson
some bulk fuel line is another good thing to have around in a few common sizes , if it is cracked at all replace it

Now I think I need to add another small one to the list for the boys a shop for there small engine and blacksmithing obsessions. The list keeps growing. But I did have a few locust die I can cut for a few post, that should save a few bucks. Having him keep track of cost and time is a great idea.
