I went wolf trapping there (for the Smithsonian, Ulan Bataar, bush from there) a couple years ago. I enjoyed the country, and was amazed at the birds and the mammals. i added 52 bird species to my life list. I spoke virtually no Mongolian, but many places I found older-aged Mongolians that still remembered Russian language. My Russian is still passable, so I was able to talk with them. I enjoyed it, but I'm not quite ready to go there in retirement. I liked their food (lots of goat, sheep, and horse meat; great cheeses), nice people too, but disease is prevalent (especially rabies) and I suspect their medical prowess is not too great. Also, and pretty important, the exchange rate was favorable, making a half-liter bottle of Russian vodka quite affordable.

International airport in Ulan Bataar. I believe this is only international airport in entire country.

Many statues in Ulan Bataar (UB).

Not a lot of vegetation. Even less as you go south towards the Gobi.

The "hotel" I stayed in in Hustai National Park. Called a "ger" Very comfortable.

This is true. English is not my first language. Lots of us like that here or from the Ozark region.

Hate to break it to you Nessy, but you can have tornados in any state. True that they aren’t common, but you can still have them. Lived in Ks all my life, and have seen a total of three, all when I was driving to other places. Not many places you can go to that there is not a down side of some kind!

That’s impressive. I hunted Kansas 8 years straight and had tornadoes 5 out of 8 times. Those folks out there don’t hide unless it’s going to hit. If it’s in sight they get in their trucks and chase it, lol. Definitely learned what they sound like and what to look for. When you head to town to get something to eat midday and Mike Slidell is there, it’s not going to be a good evening to hunt!

So?

I have no choice. I gotta go. whether that is a couple miles or a continent or two. On some level I am looking forward to it. On another level, it is way too stressful for my bride. Making her happy is the ultimate goal.

Danged if I really know.''Usually the ol' lady says "I'm going golfing, see you in about six hours." I'm thinking, maybe I ought to follow her some day...just to see what it is all about.

Wife and I checked out Tennessee this past February...it was ALREADY GREENED UP and WARM!
Hmmmm. Great folks we met, taxes were much lower, good food, conservative....we are still looking but we were impressed.

Ideally, if a guy could afford it, two locations here in the U.S would be ideal. One north for summer and one south for the winter. Lots of people do it (and love it) but out of the price range of many.

I know quite a few guys who have sold their homes and went the RV route. Kind of the same theory as above but with one home (on wheels) and you can change scenery whenever you want. I have yet to hear any of these guys regret it (and a couple hunt quite abit....just more states and more often now). Of course that doesn't always seem to fit with us trappers who tend to "acquire" lots of equipment, etc.

Some good insight on here, though.

The RV thing is not for us. Living quarters way too tight, It's a pain to find/pay a place to stay overnight. Gas prices too high. That lake view sure was pretty yesterday, but tonight that Walmart parking lot sucks.

Two houses is one thing, but two of every appliance, tool, etc is more than this disorganized guy can handle.

I had once considered owning two places as suggested but with a twist. I would build a pole building with plumbing and electrical but live in an RV. As the seasons changed I would drive my RV to the other place and set up house keeping in the shed. Could store my gear under lock and key while I'm gone but would still have to rely on good neighbors to keep watch while I'm away. Would still have to double up on some items and living out of an RV, but you would still have extra room in the shed for living space.
