Just wondering if anyone knows, of any recent reports of fisher in Iowa. I live near Dubuque and am fairly certain I saw one on my way to work yesterday.
Now I will admit I have never seen a fisher in the wild, but I have seen enough coon , mink , otter , beaver , muskrat , etc. to know it wasn't any of those.
I wish I could have stopped and gotten a picture.
I will be paying way closer attention for the next few days, and may stop and see if the people who live there have seen anything.
One of my buddies traps the property on the other side of the creek and is considering setting a couple of trail cams and possibly some bait. ( any suggestions for bait?)
I would assume that if I did see one, it was probably just a migrant one, as we have a few black bears wander through every once in awhile, but I don't suspect a population of either one.

Beaver meat is #1
Wire it to a 4 inch diameter pole ...leaning at a 45 degree angle ..about 5 feet off the ground
It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

If they are protected at all in Iowa, I'd be careful about advertising them. Would hate to see restrictions on trapping to "protect" them.

We have 'em down here in the south western corner of Wisconsin. If they can get across the big river you should have 'em down there.

I think we had them here years ago. I saw one once in SW Wisconsin and didnt have a clue what it was. I got a good long look at it and knew it was something different. I asked and old trapper back then what I could have seen, He said it was a Timber Mink. Could that have been an alias for Fischer?

Don’t know about fisher in Iowa but this one was hit on Hwy 90 just east of Rushmore Mn ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/06/full-7756-179184-15fc994d_b08a_4d92_8d0b_2f39dd2a080e.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/06/full-7756-179185-54e7b6b0_1390_4481_8bc4_545a2d67a5bd.jpeg) Had to turn around and go back to check it out because I couldn’t believe what I thought I had seen, this was several years ago If you look at a map Rushmore is just north of the Iowa line, so who knows, personally I would not be surprised

There have been several unconfirmed sightings in N.E. Iowa the past 10 years. MN DNR says there has been an increase in fisher populations in S.E. MN Iowa DNR - Vince Evelsizer, state furbearer biologist confirmed a fisher on a trail cam back in 2017 in Allamakee county. A friend of mine was in the Yellow River State Forest last year and said he saw a fisher while trout fishing. Give Vince a call - he can fill you in on Fisher sightings.
