I’m building a portion of a house that will be 24x56.

The entire floor will be radiant heat.

This side of the house will also have one bathroom and a laundry room.

What’s the best couple of options for the heat source?

Does the floor need to be separate from the hot water for the bathroom and laundry? Can they be the same?

We’ve decided wood boiler isn’t an option for now.

Thanks!

John

You want the floor system seperate so as to be able to shut it off in the summer, and for maintenance.

I would go with a wall hung combi boiler either nat gas or propane, keep hydronic & domestic water separate.

Let me know if you want a good deal on a manifold set up for the floor lines. I bought a very good one and never used it, still in the box.

Can you have a manifold with valves to control where your water goes and how much.

I rented an old house once that had steam heat. There was a bank of valves in the basement to control which areas of the house got the hot water.

You will probably put an antifreeze in your heat system and the water in the system will after while be devoid of oxygen. so yes definitely separate. Also using the infloor heat you will not have duct work, so no air exchange or AC. You can put 8 in plastic pipe under floor from utility room to rooms for a cold air return or feeds for AC.
Infloor is the nicest, most efficient and comfortable heat if installed correctly. Keep all lines the same length, insulate well beneath, double runs along exterior walls. The same heat source will run your hot water heater using a heat exchanger.
Also, as good as infloor is it has its draw backs. If you let it get cold it will take time to heat back up, and conversly, if it warms up fast outside you will be very warm for a couple days with the residual heat. I have a gas fireplace for days like that.
good luck.

As for any in floor heat, would strongly suggest an additional heat source for spring and fall when temps fluctuate a lot.
