Wife and kids love convertibles I want something with a little muscle lol but I'm trying to get in under 30K tall order

Hard to go wrong with a '64 1/2 - '66. Convertable Mustang. Easy to care for , parts readily available.

One thing to think about , any classic car can get expensive to maintain/restore unless you know how to do it yourself. I've watched many non-car people spend boatloads of cash having other people maintain their classic car.

Most classic cars are owned/restored by car guys.

Most classic cars sell for less than what it costs to restore one. It is a labor of love.

As someone who has a 1968 Camaro, I bought when I was a kid in college, cleaned me out..it was a basket case and needed everything ground up, I spent 15 years restoring it. When I had time I didnt have $$ and when I had $$ I didnt have time...

If there is one piece of advice I could give you. Buy a decent driver to start. The cleaner the better. Pay UPFRONT for what you want. You can always do motor, wheels, interior, brakes, etc...but body and paint are huge money and time sucks. Not to mention you arent driving it when those are being done, all the other stuff can be upgraded in a weekend if you want.

Had I even taken a loan on the car and bought something nicer I would have been enjoying the car for over a decade rather than a pile of parts...and the car would have appreciated to more than I paid for it.

I think I bought it in 2005 ish..at that time a decent or better driver could be had for $15-20k. Instead I bought a project for $3500 cause that was all I had.

Now a driver is probably $25-30k I see many for sale and they are disgusting and need everything done anyhow, someone elses problem they are trying to dump. But they are out there, someone has a driver that is decent 20fter for $20k someplace.

So I wish I would have taken the $3500 and put it down on a $15-20k car and been driving it and upgrading things as needed over the years.

Everyones situation is different, but if its really what you want, consider paying a little more if you find something you like and allows you to enjoy it from day one. I promise when you get behind the wheel you wont regret it.

Also I had a 1970 Caddy Convertible that I drove daily for a while, the convertible is fun in the summer, but fall the top is up in WI. Summer in the rain, those beautiful summer days with the top down might not be as many as you think in WI. With a hard top you can run in any weather, or season (minus winter obviously) and that means more days to enjoy your car...and if you get one you will want to enjoy it as much as possible.
