I'm driving a convertible right now. Years ago I owned a '71 Mercury Cougar with a 351 Cleveland. Blue with a white top. Currently driving a budget convertable. A '05 Chrysler Sebring. Black with a tan top. They can be had for cheap , $3,000 to $5,000 for a nice one. I got mine for $1,000. But it needs a new top which I am going to do myself for $600 or so. If I had someone do it for me it might cost north of $2,000. Needs a few other minor things but other than that it is a solid car. Cragar...I don't think the OP wants to be seen driving his Aunts car...you know I'm just messing with yah Lol...taken in jest. No biggie. I just got this car because it was cheap and I know it's history and it was very well maintained. Was owned by my neighbors granddaughter and her dad is a top shelf Chrysler mechanic and the car is very sound. Just cheap transportation for me.

Those are the best to buy.
Bought a 1985 Caprice Classic off an old customer..when he could no longer drive. That car was amazing

You could probably find a 64 65 Pontiac LeMans convertible in the 30 to 35 grand range
Maybe even one with a 4spd to give you that muscle car feel
Alot of GTO clones out there

As someone who has a 1968 Camaro, I bought when I was a kid in college, cleaned me out..it was a basket case and needed everything ground up, I spent 15 years restoring it. When I had time I didnt have $$ and when I had $$ I didnt have time...
If there is one piece of advice I could give you. Buy a decent driver to start. The cleaner the better. Pay UPFRONT for what you want. You can always do motor, wheels, interior, brakes, etc...but body and paint are huge money and time sucks. Not to mention you arent driving it when those are being done, all the other stuff can be upgraded in a weekend if you want.
Had I even taken a loan on the car and bought something nicer I would have been enjoying the car for over a decade rather than a pile of parts...and the car would have appreciated to more than I paid for it.
I think I bought it in 2005 ish..at that time a decent or better driver could be had for $15-20k. Instead I bought a project for $3500 cause that was all I had.
Now a driver is probably $25-30k I see many for sale and they are disgusting and need everything done anyhow, someone elses problem they are trying to dump. But they are out there, someone has a driver that is decent 20fter for $20k someplace.
So I wish I would have taken the $3500 and put it down on a $15-20k car and been driving it and upgrading things as needed over the years.
Everyones situation is different, but if its really what you want, consider paying a little more if you find something you like and allows you to enjoy it from day one. I promise when you get behind the wheel you wont regret it.
Also I had a 1970 Caddy Convertible that I drove daily for a while, the convertible is fun in the summer, but fall the top is up in WI. Summer in the rain, those beautiful summer days with the top down might not be as many as you think in WI. With a hard top you can run in any weather, or season (minus winter obviously) and that means more days to enjoy your car...and if you get one you will want to enjoy it as much as possible.
Good luck!

Hard to go wrong with a '64 1/2 - '66. Convertable Mustang. Easy to care for , parts readily available.
One thing to think about , any classic car can get expensive to maintain/restore unless you know how to do it yourself. I've watched many non-car people spend boatloads of cash having other people maintain their classic car.
Most classic cars are owned/restored by car guys.
Most classic cars sell for less than what it costs to restore one. It is a labor of love. I'm in the hunt for a nice 64-1/2 Mustang Convertible right now- I picked up my wife in a Shelby on our first date (wish I still had it) she was born in June of 1964... thought it would make a nice 60th Birthday gift next year.

Back in my high school years, I had a 55 Ford Sunliner convertible with little to no rust. It was my only car and I sold it because the harsh winters were too hard on the top. I wish I still had it. Probably be worth some bucks today.

I wholeheartedly agree about ragtops. I took a 3 hr ride with my Dad once in his 63 Impala SS convertible. Started out fine, after an hour the sun came out and the temps rose. I felt like I was being cooked in a oven. Black car with a black interior. I find nothing enjoyable about riding around in them. Before he died he asked me if I wanted the car. I told him to sell it and use the money for himself. No way did I want that. I had one ragtop of mine own. A '68 LeMans, red with a red interior. About a week of driving it around I was over it. Sold it after owning for only a couple of months. I have owned many classic cars, a couple of GTO's with Hi Po engines (RAIII, RAV, and 455SD), and a an assortment of other Pontiacs. My favorite was a '67 Ventura. 400, 4 speed, bench seat, 8 lug wheels, factory transistor ignition a great car. Ran like a top, rode nicely loved it. If I could anyone back it'd be the Ventura.
