Seems to me we have a Stihl dealer/mechanic on here. Anyway........looking for ideas.

1985 Stihl 032 AV. All original. Starts great and runs fine for about two minutes then starts to lose rpm's and eventually stops, My first thought is cracked impulse line. Checked the fuel pick up and disassembled carb and cleaned it. Diaphragms look ok as far as I can tell.

No ethanol in the gas here.

My next thought is rings. As the saw gets warmer ....perhaps it is losing compression ?? Have seen that on outboards before.

I hate to give up on it but maybe 38 years is more than I should expect. Darn thing is NOT easy to work on and I suspect a rebuild would be more than a new saw. But I don't like the new ones with that mickey mouse choke.run/ shutoff. trigger latch all in one.
I want simple, single controls.

Your thoughts ?

I googled Stihl saw dies when warm. Lots of good info and all point to a plugged vent. Sorry I can’t post a link

I would test the gas cap first , I suspect you draw vacuum on the fuel tank and that is why it dies

if you take the fuel line off the carb and put it to your vacuum pump with gauge and see if it holds vacuum , you shouldn't be able to pull vacuum on a fuel tank on a 2 stroke

you can also lay the saw on it's side while running and as it starts to slow down , crack the gas cap open if you didn't have a spare cap. if it gets right back to normal rpm then plugged vent.

Don't lay it on it's side the gas will run out. I think he is not familiar with 032s. After it dies, pop the plug and see if it is dry. At least then you will know it is a lack of fuel issue.

Right. This particular saw I can open the tank with the saw upright.

Good idea on the plug too but suspect the heat may make plug appear dry anyway. I'll try it though.

If you ever have a hard time getting parts, I have some here. Many years ago a neighbor pulled a bunch of stihls from a dumpster at a surveying company and I made two working saws and have carcasses to part out still.

The husky saws had a vent that looked like a cross section of cable, if that makes sense, and when we were cutting a lot of softwood the pitch would sometimes plug the vent. Check spark arrestor screen in muffler, sometimes they plug up, we used to remove em.

I cleaned the spark arrestor but it made no difference. In fact it didn't look bad at all

My 028 had a vent line with a set screw in the end of it and an unvented fuel cap, it was doing what you are describing. Crack the fuel crap after it dies and see if it will start. I had to take the set screw out and clean it and reinstall to solve my problem.

When it dies will it start right back up or do you have to wait until it cools down. If so the coil may be going bad. That was common with those.

Those newer 032's have problems. They don't make them like they used to.

I have a 1978 Stihl 41 Super. Great saw for many years, but no more parts are offered, ignition switch is nowhere to be found. Replaced it some years ago with a 440 Magnum.
