I am taking care of M1 Garands for our Legion. I have rust on the Op Rod. About 4 inches back from the Piston and the blank adapter. I soaked the parts in Aero Kroil to loosen the rust. But, the Op Rod has enough rust to cause pitting and I don't want to use steel wool which would also remove the bluing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try an old copper penny.

Copper is god to use but I prefer a piece of copper itself rather than a penny which has some other alloys to make it harder. A piece of ivory can work too.

4-oooo steel wool with oil as a lube. The 4-oooo is like cloth, will take the rust off but not the blueing.

I've done this. It works. Bluing stayed intact.

all copper chore boy is a good thing to keep around for gun cleaning , it's other use is a few strands wrapped on your brass brush to scrub lead out of a barrel.

if you take the bluing off there are some good cold blues out there

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I've helped a couple of posts out with maintenance on their M1's. What your seeing on the op-rods is from not cleaning the rods after firing. Remove the op rod after firing and wipe it down with Hoppe's to get the carbon off. Carbon is hygroscopic and attracts moisture causing rust and I believe some of the blank rounds had corrosive primers.

Throw it in a pot with water and boil it for a few hours then wipe it down with 0000 steel wool and a lawnmower type oil that has no detergent in it
