Son in law and daughter’s truck needed a new oil pump and sending unit. Chevy dealer wanted around 5800$ for parts and labor to do the job. 15 hours in labor and 400-500$ in parts. In all my misguided wisdom I told them to bring it down to my shop and we could get it done. Talk about a royal pain!! Got to put it on Jack stand’s, remove front tires, drop the front differential out, drop the rack and pinion steering out, remove cross member, take water pump housing a-c compressor and air pump off, pull harmonic balancer and oil cooler off, then pull timing chain cover. Seemed like a thousand snap together electrical connections on wiring harness. Then remove oil pump that rides over the front of the crankshaft. Clean everything up and put it back together. Took me, son in law, and one of his buddies 2 days to get it done and back together. No check engine light on now and not throwing any codes but I found out I ain’t neer as young as I used to be from crawling in and out from under that truck on concrete. What ever engineer from Chevrolet that design this needs to be shot. Working on some liquid pain killer to make the hurting stop. Happy Father’s Day.

5800 is extreme!y high, but as you found out this newer stuff is a nightmare to work on. That comes to over 350$ an hour!

There's absolutely no reason for vehicles to be made the way they are today. Complete stupidity from our college educated engineers.

There’s actually a very good reason for them to be made this way and that’s to dissuade the average person from fixing it themselves

It ain't just GM doing that. To change out the starter on my 2000 Toyota Tundra it is buried under the intake manifold.

In the 60's I used to enjoy doing mechanical work. Then the race for making things harder to work on exploded. Heater cores behind the air conditioners being a pet peeve. Changing the battery on some sounds like a real nightmare and this is before they are to change to all electric.

Try to pull a front head light! Have to darn near tear a truck completely apart to fix stuff now. I feel your pain

Newer models impossible work on ? Mine a 2010. Some things not real bad work on or at shop. Some are. Put headlite bulb in other day. Took 10 min get hand in an get it in right. At first wore gloves to not touch bulb. Then got aggravated an took gloves off. I don't think I touch bulb. Got it in. Cheapest bulb $23. Big corporations really took advantage of pandemic with insane price hikes on everything . Lot auto parts are dbl

Luckily i bought the extended warranty on my 13 tundra. Head gasket went, 5500 was the quote. Cost me 1300. How are lease rates right now? Sure makes an argument for leasing if you can find a decent deal.

Seems like it’s a challenge to figure out how to put windshield wipers on the darn vehicle anymore. Seemed to be a lot easier working on the 1980 cars and trucks.

My 2006 they quoted me $3900 for oil pump and sending unit or $6100 for new short block installed. No briner there.

Just changed the oil lines to the outside easy access filter on my excavator today 6 hours to get it done 2 hoses total nightmare is all I can say.

And that's why I retired....only work on my own stuff.. the newest I got is 2007...and have little trouble with it...

Best one I saw was on here I believe: someone posted a picture of a starter that was located inside the bell housing of the automatic transmission.

There are always morons that want to blame the engineer any time their toy needs a little attention.

How many miles on that beast? In my opinion 15 hours to replace a part that has given a couple hundred thousand miles of service is well engineered.

How much other maintenance has it received? Plugs? points? brakes? exhaust? Lots of the common wear parts that needed constant maintenance back when... people never even need to think about today. Why? Because the vehicle had been scrapped long before it got enough miles to need the repair.

Maybe you aught to do a little research on Chevy 2014 5.3 liter motor and see how well designed that egg sucker is. Nice engineering on the cutting it back to 4 cylinders when you’re driving it to supposedly save gas. Trouble is it also cuts the oil pressure back when it does that and burns your lifters and cam up. Most of those motors used 2-3 quarts of oil between oil changes when you drove it off the lot new. Took mine back to the dealership with 18000 miles on it and the fix was to put different heads on it, new cam and lifters. It still used 1-2 quarts even after that so I traded that peach for a Ford. Under stand there is a class action lawsuit that is pending on that year’s motor. They also have a problem with that year burning the transmission up with less than 100000 miles on them. My son in law and daughter bought the truck used off a Chevrolet dealership lot 7 months ago, with 87000 miles on it. They paid an additional two thousand dollars for the extended warranty. 4 weeks ago the transmission went out and the dealership and extended warranty people stalled them 3 weeks before they put a replacement transmission in it. That’s about the time it popped the po6dd code and told them it needed a new oil pump. So before you go calling people morons, do a little research on that year’s motor and transmission and tell me with a straight face that it wasn’t poorly designed by some genius that is highly educated in the automotive industry. If any of you buy an extended warranty read the fine print and understand what it exactly covers. The one sold to them by the dealership did cover the transmission minus the 500$ deductible after they got done arguing for 3 weeks without a vehicle. They would not cover the oil pump as they said it was normal for them to wear out with less than 100000 miles on them. Have a stellar day.

I had a 2014 with 110,000 on it . Service every 5,000 miles ZERO issues. Mine had the cut back to 4 and oil pressure stayed the same . Number of pistons firing has nothing to do with oil pump ! That motor hasn’t been changed in the Chevy for about 17 years . As for burning oil mine never used a drop. My 2011 didn’t either . But my Ford work truck I had went to be serviced with 3,000 and was 4 quarts low !! Supervisor called me up on the carpet for not taking care of my vehicle. When he found out it only had 3,000 miles on it he said never mind knew better than to get fords .

Transmission problems only surfaced because people were using the tow mode . When I got mine service manager told me not to use tow mode when pulling my bass boat Issue is it down shifts 4 gears when hitting the brakes for more than 3 seconds
