With the exception of doubling the length of the chain, I can find nothing to modify.
Very versatile unit that will take the lickin and keep on tickin.

don't rust your traps....why would you do that?

They are a lot of trap for coons, wouldn't be my first choice for them.

They are great traps though.

The only two negatives I can find with the 550's are price and weight. I use them and really like them as they are top notch. I had to really think hard to find two negatives.

Price - Depending on budget and how many traps you need in the ground, the price plays a major factor. Also, if you trap in an area where there is a possibility of theft, you don't want to be setting top of the line traps.

Weight - I have areas I have to paddle a pirogue in, then wade and walk. I have to really think about what I'm packing.

But, would I buy 550's? YES! Do I use them? YES!

With the price of them nowadays, id be only looking at getting used or get the dukes. Youre gonna have a hard time paying them off with a fur check. With that said, they bed like a dream and i really like them for coyote. If all i had was fox, id use a smaller trap. I would not set them intentionally for coon

I like them alittle pricey buying a dozen with the Biden tax added.

My only complaint is the size. I wish the jaw spread was a little bit larger. I really like the Alpha #3 for this reason.

Due to the tight tolerances they are hard to fix if run over.

Rust will help your dye absorb, but I just run new traps raw and die them after they rust. I wouldn't rust them on purpose and intend to set them rusty. They would be dyed for protection.

I like the mb 550S for yotes and fox they are great. I also run #2 Bridger dogless you also asked about
I like the larger jaw spread and I think they bed a litle better. But the larger spread is not necessarily and means diging a little bigger bed. I like the thicker cast Jaws on the 550 better. Have been planing on laminating my #2 bridges. The bridges are or were cheaper. In an area they may get stolen or ran over I would use the #2.

I currently use both interchangeably.

I have a few but not a fan as much as Bridger 2 dogless.
The MBs are a stout trap for sure but not much jaw height and they are pricey.
