I have about an acre for a food plot.
Does $250 sound about right to have it done?

Even in our inflationary time period that seems like it is high for an acre of land. Is that one pass or multiple passes to get a better worked up seed bed?

I prefer two passes. Seems high to me. Especially since the guy is 15 minutes away from the site.
Might have to figure something else out.

It sounds cheap to me too. People want that here to do a small backyard garden plot.

Not sure of his tiller size, etc. I run a 5’ tiller and wouldn’t do it for $250 for a full acre plus hauling the equipment very far. If it was my good neighbor and I could just drive tractor over then yes, no problem.

If the guy takes his time and doesn’t try to fly through it faster than the tiller can work, that’s a bargain for 2 passes on an acre.

for just $50,000 you can buy your own rototiller with a tractor, plus fuel, insurance, and a trailer to haul it,...don't forget minimum wage for yourself grin

I'd buy a tractor and a plow. But the price is about right if he does it right.

Look at it compared to the cost of his equipment I would say it’s responsible but also depends how much your willing to pay or what it’s worth to you

Below is what I was using for my thoughts. This is an average of what custom operators were charging last year for various services. I realize that these prices seem low and may not include fuel. In the past that was indicated. Also there are usually several acres involved and not just an acres.

https://farms.extension.wisc.edu/articles/estimating-custom-rate-for-2023-wisconsin-farm-operations/

An acre is 212 by 212 square feet. If the person is using a 5 foot tractor powered rotor tiller he will make about 42 passes doing it once. That is about $6 per pass, or $3 per pass if two times. It may be your best deal you have available, but in mly opinon still high. Yes you can compare it to owning the equipment etc. etc. But it still needs to be planted, rolled or crushed and seed purchased and some weed control if desired.

A couple years ago I had someone do a small field. Paid him $60 an hour. Now that you can get $20 an hour flipping burgers, I’m sure the rate is at least $80.

Go to the ag dealer, what's the cost to rent the tractor and tiller with delivery and pickup for the day? Then it's just your time and gas.
