There’s a handful of places where mail is still delivered by boat, albeit more tourist oriented than functional today- Lake Geneva, WI has been delivering mail by boat for over 100 years. I took my wife on the mail route tour yesterday for her birthday, we made about 75 mail stops- very enjoyable looking at multimillion dollars homes from the Golden Era of Chicagoland Free Market Capitalism and watching the athleticism of the young mail jumpers. The boat never stops, and we slowed down at one dock that had shallower water and the mail deliver had to run the shoreline up and down docks for over a ½ mile and then jump back on the moving boat. Fun day- here’s a couple picks of some nice cottages if you’re in the market to upgrade your trapper's cabin. We stopped at one dock where a guy was sitting at the end with camo shorts on, throwing the ball in the water for his Lab- based on the house he could be doing whatever he wanted... Nice!

Lake Geneva WI, My great grandpa and his brothers built an awful lot of those old houses that is where he met my great grandmother , she was a cook for one of the wealthy wealthy families form St. Louis , It was where the rich went to summer, cooler at night because of the spring fed lake , clean air , clean water. she ended up staying , getting married and having 12 kids.

Lake Geneva lakefront home owners were the who's who of late 19th and 20th century businessmen.

Pete- Great story! I would've loved to be a fly on the wall back then.
There’s a listing on Zillow for $36 Million now- I believe the most expensive real-estate listed in Wisconsin’s history. A lot of money in chewing gum also- the original inventor of chewing gum lived on the lake and Wrigley’s that own about 1-1/2 miles of lake frontage, in the past owned a lucrative soap company back in the day… Wrigley decided to tape a piece of chewing gum onto the soap box as a thank you… the rest is history - Wrigley Field and Chewing Gum. Morton Salt Family has a nice place on the lake also.

I'm sorry, that's an accident waiting to happen, in fact I can't believe it hasn't already happened. If the captain is coast guard certified or licensed he'd have some splainin to do, could lose his license and may have a civil suit to boot.

When I was a kid of 12 or so my Mom took big brother and I to Laconia NH on vacation. While there we took the Lake Winnipesauke mail boat tour on the Uncle Sam II, a 72 foot converted PT boat. Mail boats still operate on Lake Winnipesauke and have tours over the summer months but it is a different boat now.

it is a 100 year tradition and the mail deliverers are "stunt performers"

so it is basically the same as a wing walker with a licensed pilot

they audition for the part of mail jumper each year

they get wet some times , if the dock is unsafe then it will be skipped , it is a show and actors don't get the same osha regs

The only time they ever call for medical emergencies is when someone with Blue-Hair has a medical issue onboard Gage Marine has all Captains and they also run one Steamer on the Lake- very skilled at maneuvering around docks and fisherman pitching docks

Ocracoke NC used to get its mail by boat from Washington NC. That was before there was a paved road to Hatteras. Friend bought the old round stern mail boat. Knotts Island NC probably gets mail by boat now. Kids there go to school by boat I believe.

Hadn't been there in probably 40 years until last fall.

Don't ever recall noticing many rats, think the vegetation is wrong, pretty salty there
