I call B.S. on that. I've shot over 500 coyotes with a .17 cal and most are dead in a few seconds.

The only person who can determine if it's worth it is the buyer. Everyone should have a small caliber center. They are fun.

Wolfie, you have a good job now, start saving for good barrels. They are not cheap, take time to get and worth every penny.

I built one on a savage axis,the doner rifle was a .243 I now have a switch barrel so the grandkids can shoot deer with it here in wa state. It ended up cost me around 620.00 buck that was with the axis and a Shilen barrel and the bolt face parts.You can find bullets and new brass just take some looking. Powder valley has new brass right know ,just know .17 remington cost for new brass is around 1.25 each. I bought mine for rock chuck hunting and coyotes. I have multiple .222 and .223 but I love playing with the small calibers.

Best fur caliber ever made. Lost one in the fire few years back. It started life as a .223 then i rebarreled it to a .17 Rem.. I ran 25 gr Berger match bullets . You'd have to look for the holes on everything from coons to coyotes.

I believe keeping things simple is a good thing....

becoming proficient at shooting without a bench is also a good thing.

Or any tests at all. I hunt out of a tree saddle for deer with a gun or xbow. In the forums I'm son, guys occasionally ask how do you shoot without a test? Umm...a little thing called freehand? Really floors me when the question comes from stickbow or compound guys. Or worse, wing shooters.

being able to freehand shoot or shoot from sitting/kneeling off of two crossed sticks is a very valuable skill....shooting 90% or more from a bench is not real world at all. ymmv.

Is it worth it? It's a personal decision we each have to make. I used 17 rem for years on fox and yotes. Best fur gun I owned. Still have a few hundred rounds of ammunition and was able to pick up a box of original Remington 25gr HP. Now it's fun to shoot, but if you're paying $8.00+ per round for ammo on Gunbroker; it gets pricey real quick. But none of my hobbies seem to be cheap anymore.

I hope it's true that Remington will be loading the 17 rem soon, but not with any of the 20 grain pills from the rimfire calibers.
