Had this coat type coonskin hanging around for a while.
Going to see what it looks like as a hat.
It is quite different in character to the big Canadian coon I usually work up for hats.

Got it blocked out, fitted a pattern to the skin, and marked it out.

next step,cutting and sewing,then lining.

I think I will incorporate a snap at the back to allow for a tail option.

A beautiful silver. The steps you're drawing out is interesting.

Show the rest of your process too, please.

Will do,Sharon.
I do what I call a tailored hat.
I take one of my basic patterns and cut the pattern to fit the skin. Each different species or even size in the same species will have the pattern pieces cut a bit different.
This allows for less wasteage of fur,but is a bit more work.
Also a pattern can be cut in such a way as to have fur run in different directions on a piece, and it gets very interesting when using different species in the same hat.Visualizing in your mind what you want a piece to look like then cutting the pattern pieces to incorporate different inserts of different colours and or species gives a never ending variety in the same basic pattern-then there are also different patterns to start with-It is a creative design process.
This one is very basic.
I am an amateur, but I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with a master Italian fur designer who did amazing things in the fur medium.

Just like an artist, and architect, imagining a finished project as they are drawing the outline up.

Just like my marten hat I had custom-made , with all the different coloured fur contrasting so nicely together.

It is all art.

Nice Boco.

And the tail snap would be a good option.

I am also interested to see how the final product looks with this particular pattern. There is one important seam on this hat that needs to diappear in order to look right. If it shows I will have to tweak the pattern cut.
I have only worked with large heavy furred coon.Seams dont show when using heavy furred pelts in my experience.

All cut now and sewed together.
Turned out good,no seams showing.
Fur is fairly short, and the hat is very lightweight.

Only thing left to do now is cut and sew and install the lining, and install the snap tab and snap for the tail
Might do that later on tonight or tomorrow.
Pieces cut and placed together how they will be sewn.

If I had a hat like that around these parts, I wouldn't have to waste money on clothes. smile
Beautiful work.

They are protected here, ive never even seen one! lol

We got plenty of them low rent coat coons though, those were hot items back in the day cause they were making coats out of them willy nilly. Not good for much of anything now.

Where should I put the tail snap,at the bottom back skirt or at the top back?Which do you think would look better when the tail is snapped on?
Oh what the heck,I'll put both options.

Very attractive hat, Boco. The fur flows just right on top and sides.

Really nice work.

Hand sewn, or machine?

Nice work Boco. My preference for the tail snap would be the top back, but you can’t go wrong putting them in both locations.

Eh...wot?
