Cover the scent/spray of a rival? If so, is it better for trap placement to target the approach or the finishing touches of a bobcat's working of the set?

I would be confident in saying that most animals wild and domestic have the instinct to mark and to mark over or near another animal's spray or deposit area.

That may be a dropping, urine or some glandular excretion deposit done in their own unique manner. Just how animals keep track and communicate with each other. It is a very simple but effective method. Their sense of smell deciphers and gives meaning to the marking. DNA, male, female, in heat, old, young, injured/blood trail. etc.

If the material is interest worthy and they are receptive, I would set as I always do with my trap or traps position. Guiding and blocking is your best friend particularly with trapping cats.

Bob the little shuffle they sometimes do with their back feet , are they leaving scent with their feet? Do bobcats have glands on their back feet?

If you find scat, put a set right beside it. I found where one had scratched out the pine straw and made a deposit. Another came along or either the same one and did the same about a foot away.
I put a trap dead center with some Jameson’s cat gland lure on a little stick. First catch was a bobcat 4 days later, then a fox the next night, then another cat 2 days later, then another cat 3 nights after that. The trap across from it was a dud until after that last cat and we got a South wind. Ended up with another fox and bobcat a few days after that in that set. 4 cats and 2 fox and all I found was a couple piles of scat.

Sounds like a hot spot think you could mimic it?

If I was on an area where I could find tracks and had scat available I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Unfortunately I don’t have a place like that so I do a lot of walking to find sign like that. Either find sign or set intersections or the edges of small thick pines that hold the prey. That spot was a road coming into a clearcut. Wasn’t on the clearcut, about 20-30 yards from it.

I found this video and it shows well the scratching of the back feet. The night video probably shows what you came across Wanna Be.

Had no idea how they did it, just know that’s how it was. They don’t cover it either. But they will scrape away any debris to drop a load.

It appears they are winding up the kickbacks preparing to mark with urine or feces and some do a follow through once again with some kickbacks after they are finished. I can relate to that.

Dang, some tall, dark, handsome, incredibly intelligent guy recently wrote an article in Trappers Post about this VERY thing. Did I mention it was a very scholarly article?

Seeing as I don't receive said publication, does said "handsome and scholarly" trapper mention the difference in the drive-by spraying compared to the feet shuffling type?

Absolutely. In depth. Did I mention it was a very scholarly article?

Said author has witnessed dozens of bobcats marking vertical structures, like the one in the photo below, as well as digging places to place their droppings. Based on said observations, which include identification of the cats' gender, the author has some very specific conclusions about so-called markings. The author has also correlated those conclusions with the findings of biologists and others from published, peer-reviewed articles o confirm that those conclusions are accurate (with the proviso that no animal behavior is 100% predictable). Generally speaking, male bobcats urinate on vertical structures like walls, rocks and trees. They also generally do not over mark like canines do (in other words, when they smell where another cat urinated, they generally do not urinate on that spot to mark their territory (they may re-mark their prior urination spots). Rather, they avoid confrontation and typically smell the other guy's urine, and then go about their business. After watching dozens of cats dig places to leave droppings, the author has never seen a cat cover its droppings. Why would they leave a communication object like a dropping, and then cover it up??

Females generally are the ones that maintain "toilets" with their characteristic scooped areas in the dirt with droppings. Males are highly interested in these locations and visit them often to gather the information they provide. However, contrary to common beliefs, the males are not the ones running around leaving droppings everywhere. Their behavior is much different than canines in this regard.

As to their digging with their back feet (and scratching objects -- formerly erroneously believed to be sharpening their claws), cats have several glands in their feet and around their toes that emit pheromones (odorless chemical substances) to also mark their territories and communicate other information (that we probably don't understand a lot about). Because the information in feces, urine and digging marks is communicated via pheromones, that information is interpreted by the cat via its vomeronasal organ and cats will show a Flehman response.

Anyway, if you catch the author in the right mood with plenty of time on his hands, he will talk your ear off about such information whether you want to hear about it or not.

Thank you! Great info. You’re one that doesn’t post often but I make it a point to look up your name from time to time to brush up on topics. Thanks again.

I wonder if the population density has any effect on the intensity/frequency of said spraying behavior? Did the author have any thoughts on that?

Marion, now you know what they say about having a nice personality. That stands for something you know. I would give him the benefit of the doubt. Just kidding Tracy. You looked ok the last I saw you. But that has been many years ago now. Like a good lure and wine, they improve with aging. smile He should be real handsome now.

LOL thanks guys? I will stop pointing out the obvious if it starts cutting into Christmas.

All kidding aside, bobcat behavior and any new information (like trail cam footage)about it fascinates me. Thanks for the good info Laz!
