The South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department gets either no or very little "general funds" money from the state. Thus, they fiance their department through license fees. Its been a while since I've bought a big game license through their "limited draw" system, although in the case of archery deer, its generally like an over-the-counter type of buying in other states.
The place where I have my most of my "farmers market" produce growing is just south of a piece of non-private land that allows no hunting and thus is a deer and turkey refuge. The farmer I work with had half of a standing corn field on his property last winter and some nights there were 50 or more deer from the "refuge" eating in that area. My paratroop kid got one with a muzzle loader last Christmas time so I decided I should get back into archery hunting and try to nail some myself.
Anyway, last night I bought an "any archery East River deer" tag and a "any anterless whitetail archery East River deer" tag. My total was $60 for 2 possible deer. The buck potential archery deer tag was $40 and the anterless whitetail archery deer tag was $20.
I think I had already spent north of $100 to hunt small game, fish, and trap in South Dakota. At least we can now buy neat little credit card looking licenses for the year instead of hauling around a folded up paper one. This "credit card" style ones are $5 to get.
I better trying sticking a deer for sure this fall...

Wow. $35.50 gets me six deer by archery, black powder, or modern gun. Bear tag and turkey tags along with a fishing license.

Years back I checked on the surrounding states and we were the highest for resident license/tags, in some state you could hunt and fish for about everything for what we paid for a combo license and trapping license.
It did not hurt as much when the game was thick but wildlife has taken a big hit in the last 10-20 years so you feel it more now.

Whatever my hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses cost is worth every penny.
It's a small cost for the enjoyment I get from it. and why they can keep raising the prices here. Many don't care how much it cost for tags they will buy them anyway. The state wants more money and keeps raising the price. But if people quit buying tags and they made less becuse of the price increase well.... But it's all a hobby. 10 dollar a shot turkey loads, designer camo, hunting leases and on and on. It's not folks hunting for food and off set the grocery bill. It's a person's with disposable income and considered a sport now. I don't turkey becuse I won't pay the cost of a turkey tag it used to be 24 and I hear its in the 30s now.? Nit worth the cost when you can buy a turkey cheaper and not get ate up with the tick. Now I take my boys and yes it's fun but the cost of tags is stupid high. But people gladly pay it. I an not poor far from it but I see hunting quickly becoming a Rich man's sport. Sad when hunter number are declining

Talked to some guys from Poland that I worked with about hunting over there. From what I got out of it it’s a big chunk of your income to hunt all ammo (brass) must be accounted for and the game belongs to the state if you want some you buy it even if you shot it.

Ours are $24 for deer. There are bundles that they get cheaper per tag. I think we still don't just have deer tags but archery, firearms and muzzleloader. So if you want to hunt all 3 you are buying a bundle or tags tor each.
I don't buy many if any since I tent to take my boys and don't do the shooting. They keep going up. It's cheaper for my boys to hunt in KY than in Indiana . Ky youth tags done require nonresident extra coat and are $1;less than Indian yout licenses. Actually I believe ours are $39 for the first deer. And here's the kicker. If you don't get one with your $39 archery tag, then you have to buy a $39 firearms tag. If you still didn't get one and you wanted to hunt the muzzleloader season...another $39.

In Idaho the Sportsman package(hunting and fishing license, deer, elk, turkey, bear, wolf and mountain lion tags, archery, muzzleloader, salmon and steelhead permits is $124.25. We can buy an extra bear or lion tag for 11.50, four extra turkey for 5.00 each, unlimited wolf tags for 11.50 each. Bear baiting, hound hunting, sharptail grouse are all extra. Trapping is 26.75. I spend around $200.00 each year and another $200.00 for my wife. It is well worth it as all of this is what we do for fun year round.

Can you tell I have not bought a deer tag in several years? I have only bought youth license for the boys and small game fishing combo for me. The boys are to the point I could hunt as well as them this year but I don't thinkbi will and just sit with one of them. I think thats to high for a deer tag and the boys kill plenty. I used to always buy the bundle just incase I wanted to kill some and didn't use it so eventually quit buying them a year or so after they went up to 24$. As much as I love hunting if it were not for taking my boys the only deer I would ever shoot would be off the farm.. sad to say I probably wouldn't hunt due to time and expense. But taking the kids is well worth it What can I say I'm cheap. Wife wanted to take me out for ice cream yesterday. She ordered hers I saw a scoop was $5 and didn't order anything. Not when I can go to the grocery and get a half gallon for that price. It's just the point I guess. So I'm sure raising the prices bring in more income becuse so many would still buy deer tags even at $200 a piece. But the unnoticed cost is those like me thet quit or reduce their hunting becuse of it.

Sad when hunter number are declining Hunter numbers are declining because of rising hunting license costs, lease costs and the cost of raising hunting dogs all year for a 6 week use. You are correct, it is fast becoming a rich man's sport.

Sundance already talked above about Idaho licenses and tags. I buy a trapping license every year for $26.75. During the trapping season, between early fox, muskrat. coyote/marten, i generally spend parts of about 40 days trapping. That equates to about 67 cents per trapping day. That, my friends, is cheap entertainment. I'll take that anytime!
