I switched to chain drowners years ago and love them.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I liked the simplicity of chain drowners but those heavy end weights are no fun. I used truck brake rotars as end weights. I don't have to return to most locations so I can't leave my weights.

It's mostly rods for me now. Easier to tote in and out.

I have few 8 ft rods. Because not full size pickup . 8 ft is to short unless deep water immediately . I use maybe 2 a season on beaver. Chain drowners I made up 10 them about 2 summers ago ..prefer them over other systems but make myself . 7 ft chain. Which if make more . 6 ft is long enough or to long most creeks if drown system well work at all that is. I use rerod on both ends chain. With S- hook to adjust lengths. It cost me at least $8 bucks for each chain drowner to make up myself with hardware. Locks are most expensive an chain. 2 machine chain. No idea if advertise in shed if someone want sell some . Probly not . I figure each 1.5 coil . Chain drowner an rerod stakes. Well over $20 bucks in each unit

I make most of mine 10 foot. I typically run a 36 inch T bar stake of the deep end and can usually stand on it in waders to sink it. When it is time to pull i take the chain and lift straight up and can usually get them. If I need a shorter chain the t bar stakes fit through any loop of 2/0 chain so I can shorten it that way.

When using chain for a drowning system we just used 10' of chain staked out to deep water. The bank end held the trap. As close as we could get to the trap we fastened a weight. We used window weights called sash weights or we used tie plates. A beaver can only swim for so long with weighted trap hanging off It's foot. No need for any kind of lock on that chain when using this system.

I run 6', 8' and 10' rods. All have their place.
Easy enough to load into a short bed pickup - I just bundle, wire an orange flag on the end to keep the MTO (Canadian DOT) happy and ratchet strap the other end to the tie-down ring.

With the flag on a wire, it's easy to remove and reinstall if you're moving between locations. Almost all of my beaver trapping is ADC, so I bring an armload of gear and bring home anything that doesn't get set.

Chain drowners were not efficient for me - most times the bottom is too soft to wade or the water is too deep, so I'd be carrying brake rotors on some long walks in and out and I found that bigger beavers would drag the rotors up on shore.

I think chains probably shine in certain areas (where you can anchor the deep end with a stake instead of a weight).

Just happy to be here.

I bought the Bauer locks from MTP that are specifically made for chain.

The mountain men used about 6' of chain staked out to deep water often with a second stake for them to wrap around. Still in the journals kept by some of the expedition leaders there were complaints of lost beaver with just a foot left in the trap. But you have to remember, a lot of those trappers were really new at their craft and lacked the expertise that more experienced trappers had.
