I have some sleepy creek #3 longs springs and on some the offset is over 1/4”. Wondering if I can just grind down the contact points on the jaws and get the offset to be closer to 3/16”. The only thing I see happening is the springs coming up a little higher, past the little notch but I don’t think this will cause any issues. Also I’m thinking of putting stainless rod dogs on the #3s with the stock ScM pans. Anyone ever have any issues doing either of these things? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe try laminating them and pulling the rods closer together than the offsets.

I've did the grinding on the inside jaws contact faces on Bridger 2 dogless coilsprings. Took off evenly as I could from all 4 jaw faces. I've never had an issue. Probably closed the offset a 1/16".

You can just flip the loose jaw around too. As far as the rod dogs, I tried that and with sleepy creek having that notch in the pan, there wasn't enough contact there in my opinion on the rod dog. Maybe if you'd file the night latch back a little bit then there would be more pan creep too. I wasn't a fan but just my opinion

I did this with some sleepycreek jaws that I put into #2longspring frames, basically creating a "2N" trap.
I didn't like the wide offset so I ground enough to narrow it down...a pain but it worked.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Thanks for the feedback y’all. I think I’m going to do some grinding and see how it goes. Worst case I have to put a little bubble back to bring them back to their original position. As for the rod dogs I’m thinking I maybe able to file the night latch back a little bit and find a sweet spot. ScM pans definitely don’t have a nice crisp edge like a 550 or PIT pans.

The grinding should work fine. I've taken regular jawed traps before and welded a couple bubbles on them to make them offset. After welding the bubbles I filed each bubble down so they were exactly the same and had the offset I wanted. I preferred a file over a grinder because it was slower and I wouldn't accidentally take more off one than I wanted. Not tried it with factory offsets, but it would be the same idea.
