What size trap works better in the bucket set a 220 or a 280 ? I'm going to purchase some new traps and was wondering if the one inch really matters. I will be using these for other sets also. Thanks

I used 220's with sardine in oil wired to the bottom of the bucket off of docks 3 to 4 feet under water,I attached a 6 foot snare to the bucket and anchored to the dock,it worked very well. One day I went 3 for 4 off one dock.Great set because they are used to stealing minnows out of minnow buckets etc.good luck you'll do well.

I always stood the bucket upright on the bottom,I'm sure it would work laying on it's side as well.It really work's well.good luck in the future.

Rick, did you poke small holes in can to let the oil seep?

I'm excited to try this set. Another tool in the box . We can only trap 2 otter in Wi. So a different set makes it a little more exciting. Thanks again Rick

So the bucket is completely submerged in the water? How does the otter know if there is anything good to eat in that can inside the bucket? I don't think they can smell under water. Maybe they are checking the bucket to look for bait fish to steal and see that shiny sardine can.

yes i don't know if they can smell under water or not,I know they can see.I've used a cut out of a fish profile and wrapped it in tin foil and had good results also.

I'm sure a 8 inch musky swim bait etc. would work also.

I think since otter are curious by nature, something like a bucket would be a draw in itself. Add another visual such as a can or fish lure inside would be a bit much for them to resist checking out.

Rick, are you using blue buckets? Lol

I've never used the set, but back in the day I recall that a larger sized pan fish (bluegill, rock bass, etc) was wired in the bottom of submerged, upright bucket guarded by a 220.
