The South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department gets either no or very little "general funds" money from the state. Thus, they fiance their department through license fees. Its been a while since I've bought a big game license through their "limited draw" system, although in the case of archery deer, its generally like an over-the-counter type of buying in other states.
The place where I have my most of my "farmers market" produce growing is just south of a piece of non-private land that allows no hunting and thus is a deer and turkey refuge. The farmer I work with had half of a standing corn field on his property last winter and some nights there were 50 or more deer from the "refuge" eating in that area. My paratroop kid got one with a muzzle loader last Christmas time so I decided I should get back into archery hunting and try to nail some myself.
Anyway, last night I bought an "any archery East River deer" tag and a "any anterless whitetail archery East River deer" tag. My total was $60 for 2 possible deer. The buck potential archery deer tag was $40 and the anterless whitetail archery deer tag was $20.
I think I had already spent north of $100 to hunt small game, fish, and trap in South Dakota. At least we can now buy neat little credit card looking licenses for the year instead of hauling around a folded up paper one. This "credit card" style ones are $5 to get.
I better trying sticking a deer for sure this fall... Minnesota isn't to far behind for resident deer tags.

I better trying sticking a deer for sure this fall... The PA Game Commission doesn't receive any money from the State General Fund either. It is funded mostly through license sales, timber, oil and gas revenues on State Game Lands (it owns more than two-million acres) and the federal Pittman-Robertson excise tax on guns and ammo. Last year I paid around $130.00 for my general hunting and furtaker licenses and all the associated tags. That allowed me to hunt and trap everything available in the state except antlerless deer and federal migratory birds. Antlerless deer are an additional $6.97 per tag. And migratory birds require the federal duck stamp. This year I qualified for a lifetime senior license so my costs were more but it will pay for itself in two or three years.

I should add that we can only kill one buck deer per license year but up to six doe at $6.97 a tag.

Yeah. PA is pretty much ala carte.
$20.97 Adult hunting license gets you a buck tag, fall turkey and spring turkey + small game. $16.97 Archery $11.97 Flintock muzzleloader $16.97 Bear $21.97 Special spring turkey (2nd gobbler tag) $20.97 Furtaker $6.97 Fisher permit $6.97 (x3) Antlerless deer
So, last year, I had $137.70 in it.

Lifetime license for me. I'll buy them for my sons at 16. $775 for hunting, fishing and trapping.
It was $400 in 1990. Not too bad of a price increase in over 30 years. Nothing like that here. I didn't mention that before I bought my two archery deer tags for $60, I dropped $175 in early February for my general license but that also included a couple of donations and the cost of my "credit card" style license so probably closer to $130 for general small game, fishing, and trapping. I'll still need to pay my $30 (I think that's what it is nowadays) for my fed waterfowl stamp. And yes, I agree any out of state hunting is going to cost more than what one pays for resident tags. And yes again that Adam from NM may be laughing his *** off at my whining about spending $60 for two archery deer tags. I really wouldn't mind that amount of coin to the state if they were actually doing something to promote/increase wildlife in my area but the whole ecosystem is on auto-pilot here, the state guys just collect the money to pay for their law enforcement of the rule book. We'll see if they increase the ridiculously low lottery tags for my county next spring's turkey shotgun season. Then again, I could always buy a separate non-lottery turkey archery tag for $30...

In Idaho the Sportsman package(hunting and fishing license, deer, elk, turkey, bear, wolf and mountain lion tags, archery, muzzleloader, salmon and steelhead permits is $124.25. We can buy an extra bear or lion tag for 11.50, four extra turkey for 5.00 each, unlimited wolf tags for 11.50 each. Bear baiting, hound hunting, sharptail grouse are all extra. Trapping is 26.75. I spend around $200.00 each year and another $200.00 for my wife. It is well worth it as all of this is what we do for fun year round. It's only $125 or so if you're price-locked. Sportsman's combo is $144 otherwise. Those second bear and lion tags can also only be used in certain units. Still not a bad deal, but then again it gets us a single deer tag.
Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand

It's goofy that farmers and landowners provide shelter and food for the deer yet the State claims ownership of all wildlife. In NE even landowners have to buy a permit from the Lords. I'm on the police/ sheriff's hotline for roadkill deer in winter.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

The meat pays for the tag. You ain't wrong. Average deer here 30 to 35 meals. Tags are a small part of the cost. Gas to get to location, gear, time hunting and processing , processing equipment and packaging, lease if that's your thing. Add it up honestly and it's some of the most expensive meat you will ever ear.

Well Roger, you deer license is a few dollars more than ours but you don't have a state income tax and your sales tax is 3 percent lower.

I'm on the police/ sheriff's hotline for roadkill deer in winter. State of Texas owns the deer. You cant even move 1 from the roadside. But Does the state pay YOU back if YOU hit 1 of THEIR deer on the highway?? Nope
