I was surprised an elk is slightly faster than a coyote and a lot faster than a whitetail deer. Also, a black bear is faster than a whitetail deer.

Top speed and sustained speed and the duration that speed can be sustained are all critical factors. I believe a black bear may be able to achieve a top speed of 35 mph for a very short time, but a whitetail can sustain 30 mph for much longer. Otherwise, black bears would have eaten all the whitetails.

I have read numerous times that red fox can easily outrun coyotes, but that doesn't match the data above.

No way can a cougar fun that fast.

Another factor to consider is agility.
Foxes have called a 'cat like canine'. Very agile. Handles like a Ferrari in tight places. Can turn on a dime.
Coyotes are built more like a muscle car. Fast , but not that agile.

I've chased plenty of whitetails and coyotes horse back and whitetails are very noticeably faster than coyotes. Coyotes I can catch pretty easy. If I'm on a faster horse I can catch up with deer but it takes some country to do it.

I didn’t think a wolf was faster than a deer. I’m still not sure about that one.

I agree with everything that has already been mentioned, top speed is just that. Lots of things help an animal adapt to being able to survive, whether it is prey or predator.

Wonder if they clocked that coyote when it was being chased by dogs?

About the only thing I’d say is close to accurate is the pronghorn and that’s some serious speed for an animal. And that’s just from memory seeing them run along the fences out in NM.

Coyotes and wolves in a chase wear down deer by running relays with other pack members.

I've seen coyotes run down deer.

Deer are sprinters not endurance runners.

I was driving along side a Buck lope i got up to 57mph and yhe pronghorn hit the afterburners and shot foreward running across in front of my truck....Unreal

Reds around here are heading in the thicker cover and their agility and quickness works well there and they can avoid the yotes. Out on a large open field the yotes can run them down quite easily. I don't know how accurate those figures are but they all make me look really, really slow!! Wow a 90 lbs. wolf travelling at 40 mph hitting a 45 mile per hour 400 lbs. elk, man nature has some real violence.

It's impressive for sure. And it's sustained speed.

I had a heard running along a fence next to my truck for bout 3 miles. I was doing 45 50 they finally jumped the fence and kept going

I forget the actual speed, but I believe the fastest recorded speed from a mammal was a husband running from his angry wife

If a buddy and I are being chased by a bear as the saying goes, I just have to be a step or two ahead of him and I am good.

He that has more motivation is usually the winner.
