I got a bunch of Montgomery #2s yesterday. And wanted to get everyone’s thoughts. It’s my first year trapping and I’m trying to not get divorced because I wind up spending too much money. These traps were a great deal and they are hardly used. I hear all the chatter about MBs and Duke but I personally haven’t seen too much on the Montgomerys just wanted to get some feedback thanks.

The old high lever dogless are great traps IMO

The traps are square and the springs seem fine. Not spongy like I’ve seen on some older traps.

Like line jumper said. I've heard the high lever monts held well my experience with the round jaw not so good.

Montgomery made quality stuff and were a well built trap. They will serve you well.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Offset or reg jaw?
I liked the round jaw #2 Monty's used them for years in fact still do. Easy to adjust and cheap enough to modify.
John Graham's #2 rj trap was a beefier version...improved.
With all that said...J.C. Conners gave me a tip years ago about roughing up the jaw face on those traps by using a file.
The reason was some pull outs I had experienced in typical trapline weather conditions we all experience...rain, frost, snow etc.
J.C.s wisdom helped out so pass that along to others.
My take is IF you have access to a welder weld up the base, cross piece and the piece that connects the pan to frame. While you are at it bubble the jaw tips.

The square jaw trap came in an early lower lever model and needed some TLC. The higher lever version was better and had better chain. Overall good trap and easy to adjust.
Newer springs helped or a Taos Lighting Kit from J.C. Conner. I believe MTP's Bridger #2 version is a better trap...over all better features.
Just my take...I hope this helps you

Thank you for the tips . I really appreciate it I can use all the help I can get. They are regular jaw Montgomery . I actually got some brand new Bridget offset #2 s as well but i didn’t realize they were 4 coil. They are a pain in the but to set. Lol.
