I don't mind working with and handling wolves, bears, lions, or rattlesnakes. I've done it most of my life. However, when it comes to yellowjackets or bald-faced hornets, I fully understand the concept of phobias. I don't like 'em a bit and scream and run away like a little girl.

A few years ago in interior Alaska, though, I witnessed a weird raven feeding behavior. For years, I assumed the torn up hornet nests were due to bears, then I watched ravens doing fly-by's on nests, and figured out what was going on. The ravens would fly erratically through the tree canopies, reach their beaks off to the side, and rip the hornet nests open. Then they would spiral down the ground where the nest eggs and larva had fallen, and they would eat. The angry mobs of hornets would be buzzing around the ripped up nest up in the tree, and wouldn't go down on the ground where the birds were feeding. Seemed to be a pretty decent feeding strategy.

Thank God we don't get the bald faced hornets down here but the fire ants and scorpions suck. The only thing worse is the yellow jacket because they can drop down on the back of your neck 5 or 6 deep and make you have a very bad day. If I see a nest by day, I make myself get out of the chair and spray them down after dark. Miserable creatures.

Usual nest attack here happen after the first frost -3c where the adults have been killed off, but there are still larvae being reared and the Grey jays go in for the snacks. By that time the overwintering queens have left the nest.

Hornets I respect.

Those yellow jacket devils I am terrified of. Rarely see an yellow jacket nest above ground here. The aggression/defensiveness they exhibit near their nest is on another level! They'll make the toughest man run away screaming, "I didn't mean to get near your nest...please stop stinging me!" Lol

You've never seen a horse run so fast, or a rider ride so well , in fleeing an angry mob of hornets after their nest was accidentally stomped on. Been there.

Yeah. Small float planes accessing small lakes in Alaska, often the hornets/yellowjackets (Vespula/Dolichovespula) will mob the airplane as it approaches the shoreline. Seems sometimes in the thousands, all looking to sting. Is it the whine of the engine/propeller that ticks 'em off?

I recall a June day in the early 1970's. A trip between my homestead and Sleetmute. Cub on floats. Decided to stop and fish a medium sized lake in the tundra. Landed and gliding to a stop. Pulled the mixture, engine quits and we sail in silence towards the shore. The bugs were so intense you could hear them hitting the skin of the plane and bouncing off the windshield.

Maybe they are attracted to the heat of the engine or the exhaust smell ??

Thankfully that bird had an electrical system and we fired up and left post haste, with no need to get out and prop it !

I watched a raven do that to a hornet's nest hanging under the eaves of my woodshed. The Raven actually inverted as he sailed under the eave and sliced the nest with his beak. Some pretty cool flying !

white17 - Miss Lisa and I were amazed at the speed and the convoluted, inverted flying the ravens were doing hitting the hornet nests. After they'd hit a nest on a very high-speed fly-by, they immediately spiraled to the ground, apparently under complete control, although the first 2 or 3 times we saw it, it appeared they were going to splat on the ground. We ended up pouring toddy's and sat on the deck watching the show. Better show than at the Alaska Bush Company!

Can you tell one nest form the other without seeing the critters???? Does one species make a slightly different nest, can you tell them apart?.....jk

One summer, I looked at and photographed 78 aerial nests in and around Fairbanks. Several times I thought I had it figured out, only to be proven wrong on the next nest. So the answer is no, I cannot tell with certainty if it's Vespula (yellowjackets) or Dolichovespula (bald-faced hornets).

Did some work for a Gal that had a large picture window with an aluminum awning that Baldies built a nest right against the glass. You could SAFELY see inside the nest and watch the daily doings of the hive. Fascinating!

I don’t know if they exist here in Idaho but when I lived in PA, a certain group of yellow jackets had holes and nests in the ground. Nasty little buggers when you run directly over their holes with a lawnmower. Had a bald face sting me once. Painful, to say the least.

Yeah Grandpa, ground nests are fairly common in Idaho. I would guess about 80% are aerial nests in low bushes or trees or even up on rock faces, but that leaves 20% or so as holes in the ground. Can't see 'em 'til you step on 'em, then you're toast.
