Originally developed (not usually broadcasted)for dropping Indian ponies at 100 yards.
The . 45 Colt was designed, among other things, to be effective against an Indian war pony at 100 yards. More horses than men were killed during many battles, sometimes two to one.Sep 2, 2022

Was reading about the old 5 pound 44 caliber colt walker the TX rangers used. That pistol was designed around the idea of being able to kill a man or horse at 100 yards too.

Most powerful handgun I have is a 357 magnum. It will reliably kill deer at 50 yards.

I have a Pietta replica 1858 new army. They sell conversion cylinders for them that convert it to 45colt. Near as I can tell the conical bullets I Cast for it are shooting about the same velocity as 45colt smokeless. It will kill deer too.

They only loaded five, hammer down on an empty cylinder. I have a Uberti SAA that I really like. In the movies I've seen them never run out or reload!

They really don't need much powder in their cases since they sling those bullets at each other.

A curious thing. During and since the pandemic, some loading brass has been hard to get. .41 mag, 44 mag, .357 etc. Just cant find them, scarce as primers.
BUT, you can get all the .45 Colt brass you want for .25 cents a piece. I find that odd.
I'm starting to see a few boxs of loaded .45 Colt in the stores though. High dollar but it's there.

but most people only carried them with 5 rounds , leave that hammer down on an empty

not an issue in the newer Rugers because of the transfer bar

first handgun I deer hunted with was a 44mag super blackhawk pre transfer bar I was borrowing it

I also had my old new frontier clone i got when I was 17 you get get very good at loading in the dark , hammer to halfcock , load one ,skip one, load 4 more , hammer back ,hammer down , it is on the empty
back when we had to unload to get in a truck in WI

I’ve been eyeing a Henry in 45LC. Looks sharp and would make a fine meat harvester out to a 100 yards easily I would think. Anyone who owns one, I’m all ears.

I don’t have one but I have friends that do and you couldn’t pry them away from their Henry 45s, to me there ok but a bit chunky when compared to a Winchester 94 in 45 or one of the 92 clones from uberti or others, personally I would love to find one of the old pre rem Marlin cowboys in 45 colt

But the Henry will probably outlast you and your kids, the are built like a tank

if you already have a stock of 45lc or reload for it , yes

if you have no 45lc and don't reload it

I would go 44mag

it has greater potential in store bought ammo

most 45lc ammo is loaded to be safe in old guns made for black powder pressure levels

all 44mag guns are ready to take Mag pressures from mag ammo but you can shoot down loaded or 44spl form it also

you can get really close velocity in 45lc with hot loaded ammo but it isn't about any box off the shelf ammo without going looking for +P
