Hi Fellow Snare Men.
Googling through the net I came across this lock that admittedly I don’t know and had never seen before.
Anyone familiar with it?
Anyone using it?
What size cable would fit?
Despite the photo and description provided by the supplier, I don’t really understand what this lock is about and how it is supposed to function? Is the clip referred to just a break-away? If it would, shouldn’t it be positioned in the lower eye of the lock?
Thanks.

I use that on all my snares minus the loop between the cable and lock.

It supposed to be a break away device. The cable would cut through that ring and let a leg snared cow or deer, etc escape.

Quote
A modification of our standard neck lock - the Thompson New Release Lock is an improved break release device allowing you to reset your snare should the release be activated. The lock utilizes a release pin which can quickly be replaced if necessary without needing to replace the snare. This break-away noose device, rated at 280 lbs, meets all legal requirements for states which require their use.

The lock is different. It doesn't have that second hole yours has, the slot goes all the way to the end.

backroads, are you saying that you use that you have used that rectangle shaped metal piece on you snares before? Have you ever had a release?
Thanks ahead of time

I'm guessing he uses sure locks or slide free locks maybe BMI Mini locks like in this picture Mike. The lock in the picture that the OP posted wouldn't hold anything without that ring/pin the cable would slip right out the top. It doesn't have the second hole needed to work without the ring/pin.

These new BAD locks have this area in red cut out and replaced with that ring/pin that will break at 280 pounds....

I use the older Thompson locks. The ones you pictured are a bit different. Mine have a hole at each end and the groove cut in the bend. Very similar to the sure locks. ADC has a good picture. The Thompson locks are similar to those.

I see now. My mistake. Maybe I should look close. I haven't seen that new lock before.

I hadn't either until this post came up. It's an interesting idea. That ring/pin must be pretty soft metal.

They don't rely on the bur on the hole to lock like a lot of one piece locks do so maybe they would still lock up but I'd have to try them to know for sure. You may very well be correct.

They may be designed as a "relaxing lock", I don't know.

You could maybe try the Thompson website, they might not have distributed any yet.
