I've used both wire and wood stretchers on cats and coyotes and like the fuller look of cats boarded on wood. Have mostly wire for both critters and an idea struck me. Maybe someone else had it, too.

Was cleaning up the shop area and have a pile of 5/8" garden hose that needs tossed. Wonder if a guy could slice open a length of hose to match the length of the wire and cover the stretcher with it to make it thicker? I'd think you could forego belly boards as there would be ample air space inside the stretched fur. Would be the same 3/4 thickness as many wooden stretchers.

Anyone ever tried this?

Interesting idea, don't see why it won't work. Try it and report back.

would eliminate the rust or mold transfer on cat skins which is a real problem for line fur drop after tanning which comes from wire forming boards
