Any outdoor event outside in the summer down south is crazy, yank's would be falling over left and right in this 110 heat index stuff we got going on right now. That said, first NTA convention i ever attended was in Cookeville, Tn. in 1984. I think so many griped about the heat and the low turn out compared to other NTA's at the time the south wasn't ever considered a place to hold it.
The SE regionals were suppose to give you a taste of what one is like but they have fizzled out pretty much in recent years. I doubt NTA even cover's their expense on those anymore.

It's a nice thought, but I know a southern NTA convention won't happen. Just ain't enough of us down here to justify it. We can barely get enough folks to attend our state conventions

I was thinking somewhere in lower Alabama or Georgia. Close enough to the beach that you don't have to drive so far, but far enough away you can feel the full effect of a deep south August day. What would be a good town to fit such criteria?

Foley, Al. Just off I 10, western bunch get to come through that traffic nightmare called Mobile BUT the women would love it as they have huge outlet there, lol. Can even see peanut feilds and fruit stands everywhere with fresh produce grown locally. Ft. Morgan is just down the road if you are into civil war stuff or you can hit Gulf Shores and get sun burnt before heading back home, lots of GREAT gulf seafood to try out also.
And it's usually 900 degree's, 200 percent humidity and skeeter's big as dragon fly's for your after dark entertainment, lol.

The SE regionals were suppose to give you a taste of what one is like but they have fizzled out pretty much in recent years. I doubt NTA even cover's their expense on those anymore. SE Regional in Bland VA last October, and Western Regional in Rock Springs in June, both turned a profit - the Western while using the revamped $ splits. If you don't know, best not to speculate - you may end up looking foolish.

Change the time of the year when the convention is held. It's going to be hot in the end July. Move it to the beginning of October. You'd see better weather and WAY bigger crowd. Not as many people thinking about trapping in July as October. There is no good reason not to. Reason why it's held when it is is so you can get kids to attend easier. Hamburg was a special case a few years ago and was later than the usual dates and some states were already back in school or practices for fall sports have begun.

Just like nobody from way down south would want to go up north in dead of winter. Have it in February down south.

There is always sports at schools these days. IMO that's a poor excuse. Kids can come on Saturday or take a day or two off school to attend. The dealers would make a lot more money with way higher attendance closer to season. People aren't going to spend much of their camping and fishing money on trapping supplies. Unlike many people on trapperman, most trappers aren't thinking much about trapping in July.

By then, most guys would already of gotten most of their supplies and or already hit their states convention as most state conventions have already happened by October. Not too many conventions have happened before the NTA currently so they are getting the first bite of the apple instead of the leftovers. When the NTA convention happens, state convention attendance is almost nothing. The state convention would hurt the NTA attendance with going last. FTA convention might benefit a lot that way.
Plus in October you're going against college football and fall festivals so fairgrounds and hotel availability gets dicey.
You'd also lose a lot of your volunteer pool too. All poor excuses IMO. If you built it they will come. --- Really doesn't matter though. The NTA won't change - "status quo."

I wonder why they're never held in the deep south? No southern association steps forward and volunteers to host it. A national convention takes a lot of work which means a lot of volunteers. And besides that, all you Yankee's seem to have something against sweating!!!!!

North Carolina and Georgia put in a joint bid to host it in Asheville, NC the same year that Escanaba and Springfield,MO put in bids. Escanaba was selected for very valid reasons.
I am looking forward to seeing the attendance in VA.
The FTA attendance in 2019 in Harrisonburg, VA was excellent and I suspect it will be again for the FTA at the same location in 2024.

I think many organizations are always looking for a few good people to jump in and give them a hand. Maybe your ideas could change a lot of minds if you were to run for an opening on a trapping association board? I'd vote for you.

I was all for a Virginia Convention when they bid the first time. But Escanaba was bidding against them and you can't argue against their success. I think Virginia is an excellent choice for a Convention. Close to Pennsylvania, Michigan, and all of the East coast guys to draw a crowd.
