Whatever you do, get a forester involved first. Then get a good login outfit as some of the cheap ones will leave the place like a tornado went through it and leave you with a mess that can take weeks to sort out. My neighbor did that and the place is going to take longer than he has left to live to recover
Let's go Brandon

Envision how you want it to look when they are done and include that in the specs. Tops scattered or piled? Skid roads anywhere or do you have places in mind for your management plan? A GOOD logger can really enhance your property. A bad one will nearly destroy it.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Capital gains tax. I'm not up on it anymore but used to a standing tree is capital gains and a log sold as a log is ordinary income and even subject to social security taxes. The tax decision used to have to be made before any cutting. Like I say I'm living in the past but might be worth thinking about before getting to far into it. When I had mine cut the last time I traded heavy equipment work for stumpage. Essentially, I made nothing but I got roads established and food plots cleared in exchange.

Don't sell any timber without using a forester to protect your interests and forest. I have hundreds of horror stories from people who "trusted the logger". Definitely yes

A GOOD logger can really enhance your property. A bad one will nearly destroy it. Leave the tops alone, generally speaking. Often the best regeneration will occur where deer can't get to the new tree through the old tops.

Do they really still buy stumpage by scale? All stumpage in my area has been bought and sold by the ton for the last 50 years. In our area it is primarily hardwoods and it is all sold on scale. I have never heard of a tonnage sale around here. As to the OP. Do not even bother calling logging outfits. Contact a good independent forester to mark your woods and market the timber. They will work for you and have you and your woodlots best interest in mind. Dealing with the logging companies yourself often ends up with horror stories of decimated woodlots. Many (not all) logging companies will make very attractive offers on the surface BUT often that comes at a heavy price to the woodlot if you don't have a reputable forester on your side.

I'm want to have my woods cut I have to thin the trees out because the woman who use to Here never cut down trees . He text me a price I think it's lowball price. He gave 1000 board feet for the maples and 20 a cord for the pine. Never, ever, ever trust the logger! They will promise you stuff to get your trees but will never fulfill those promises. Get with your forestry representative and they will make sure you get what you deserve, which in most cases is double what a logger tells you.
